April 5, 2020 ~ Palm Sunday
Join us TONIGHT Palm Sunday and Easter via Zoom at 7:00PM!
Meeting ID: 144 809 501
Greetings everyone,
Today, Sunday, April 5th, is Palm Sunday; the day when Christians celebrate the triumphant entry of Jesus into Jerusalem the week before his death and resurrection. Palm Sunday, also referred to as "Passion Sunday," marks the beginning of Holy Week which concludes on Easter. This is a VERY different Holy Week for Catholics this year due to Covid 19. Usually, we will be gathering to celebrate the various liturgies of Holy Week filled with messages and imagery that provide us insight into our identity and purpose as Catholics. I have to say, I am sad not being together in person this week as a community. However, Palm Sunday reminds us that we are united in a mission of empathy, justice and peace even when we are apart.
Palm Sunday is not just about recalling a historical event of 2,000 years ago, but rather is a call to action for us individually and collectively. The story of Jesus' entry into Jerusalem is one of that reminds us that we as Christians are called to be in solidarity with those who have been marginalized and harmed by economic, social and political systems that have oppressed individuals and groups. We are called to work to restore equity, inclusion, and justice for all people.
While today we will not be physically walking in procession at Mass, we are called to reflect on who we are walking in solidarity with. I especially ask you to keep in your prayers the following groups and communities that are facing challenges and great need during this time:
All essential workers and medical personnel, for their physical safety and emotional well being.
All those who are suffering with Covid 19 in the hospital and their families who cannot be with them.
All those who have died from Covid 19, and their families who mourn their loss.
For the Sisters of St. Joseph in the Motherhouse
For our community partners at Our Lady Guadalupe Parish in Marion, St. Francis Inn in Philadelphia, the Columban Mission Center in El Paso and Mary’s Place in Rochester.
For the health of Pope Francis
Even amid the uncertainty of these days, we remember that Holy Week leads us to the joy and hope of Easter! Please see below various ways you can still participate in the liturgies of Holy Week via online streaming.
Pax et Bonum,
~ Jamie
Good Friday Stations of the Cross via Zoom
You are invited this Friday, Good Friday, 4/10 to pray the Stations of the Cross. This traditional Lenten prayer is a powerful way to enter into the mystery of Jesus' gift of himself to us. Zoom link: https://naz.zoom.us/j/478288563
The Stations of the Cross is not a historical examination of “what happened” on that day in history. Rather, the Stations of the Cross provide an opportunity to use this long-standing Christian prayer to let Jesus touch our hearts deeply by showing us the depth of his love for us by placing ourselves into the journey Jesus took on Good Friday.
The point of this exercise is to lead us to gratitude. It will also lead us into a sense of solidarity with all our brothers and sisters who suffer throughout the world. Praying the stations also helps us to remember that we are not abandoned by God as we carry the crosses of our own lives.
