We sent information home last week about our Valentine's Box Family Project. We will need your help! Please have your child decorate a box ( shoe box, cereal box, tissue box) to hold your child's Valentine's Day cards. The sky's the limit, so be creative! Please be sure to leave an opening at the top for the cards to be deposited, but also leave a way to open the box to get all the cards and goodies out without destroying their prized creations. We would also like to have your child's name very visible.
We will need finished boxes to be brought to school by February 13th.
You may want to shop for a box of little cards for Valentine's Day. All of our 1st grade classes have 18 children and 1 teacher. Please don't forget our Specials teacher and teachers that provide small group services. A list was sent home with the names of students in your child's class. Please use these names to pre-write your Valentine cards.
February 20th-there is school for the students. This is our cultural night in the evening.
What We Are Learning This Week
Language Arts/Reading/Social Studies: We will be learning about Abraham Lincoln, our 16th President. We will investigate his life and why he is on our currency. We will continue a unit on developing research skills, we will be learning how to use information that we read in informational text by following written multi-step directions with picture cues to aid with understanding. The children will be continuing to finding facts about penguins and writing about their learning. It might be a good time to watch the movies on Happy Feet and The Penguin story by BBC. National Geographic Kids is a good resource also:

Spelling/Words Their Way:
On Friday, we will have a sight word test on the following words - want, how, will, don't, know. Please work with your child to learn them. Children should be able to read these words with fluency and automaticity.
On Monday, your child will bring home a sheet with directions, a sheet with a group of pictures or words, and a mat. Please cut the pictures/words apart and have your child practice sorting them by the rule they are studying. Student should practice the sort Monday through Thursday. On Thursday night they will need to glue their sort down to the mat.
Math: We will be studying place value. We will be working with building numbers with place value blocks, and we will be able to show numbers as groups of tens and ones. For example, the number 53 can be modeled as 5 groups of ten and 3 ones. We will be using skip counting by 1's, 5's and 10's.
We will also be comparing numbers that have the same digits, for example 25 and 52-we will be able to explain why these numbers are different. We will be continuing with IPS questions. During this 9 weeks student will be given an equation, and they will have to write a story problem to match the equation and solve for the questions. This will change the format for our math homework on Wednesdays.
Science: We will continue our study of objects in the sky. This means we are continuing our learning on the the moon, the stars, the sun, constellations, day and night. We briefly look at the solar system and the rotation of the earth, and why we have day and night. Soon we will be discussing seasons, how the sun drives the weather patterns on our planet, and how the moon controls the tides in our oceans.
