Health as a Whole
Happy Monday Everyone!
With the bustling season of the holidays behind us and the greater part of the New Year before us, it’s exciting to think of all the possibilities and opportunities that await us when it comes to our health. At the immediate mention of the word “health”, so many related terms and phrases come to mind—eat well, clean eating, detox, get fit, longevity, wellness, lifestyle, strength. One that stands out in particular is holistic.
Holistic health embodies the beauty and interconnectivity of mind, body and spirit, and encourages seeking solutions by addressing the source not just the symptom. I am a huge believer in the holistic approach in all areas of life, and want to spend just a moment discussing the power and reward of taking a holistic approach when it comes to your health.
There are a number of ways to interpret and carry out this approach but I like to keep it pretty simply. In order to promote good health, we must aim for great physical, mental and emotional well-being. I don’t know about you, but if I am feeling a little sluggish or unmotivated at the gym, it’s likely related to my sleep patterns, my diet, my relationships or all of the above. Those who know me well know that I am quite passionate about working out, and so if I’m not fired up to go on a run or take part in a fitness class, there are issues at play—unrelated to my physical ability—that I need to address.
At the current moment, I have had a few nights of poor quality sleep and my diet…well let’s just say I am excited that it’s a new week for that! No regrets, just room for getting back on track. That being said, I am currently not craving a workout, which for me is so abnormal.
What am I going to do about it? I am going to get my tush to a class or my feet to the pavement and reset my mind, body and spirit. I trust that my level of motivation, my quality of sleep and my diet will all improve and strengthen simply by getting active. I know those endorphins will be released and a cascade of positive consequences will follow.
So the moral of this story is to take a step back and look at the bigger picture. If you feel up against a roadblock, take a second to assess all the factors that may be standing in your way. Imagine addressing them and gaining the mental, emotional and physical strength to forge ahead! Eat well. Sleep well. Exercise often. Connect with others. Feel great!
In good health and much gratitude,
Meg
