Week in Review
What happened to the heat? We started the week at 92 degrees on Monday and ended at 58 today. Great football weather!
Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, we had super STEAM training. As we get steeped in STEAM, the transformation that is increasingly visible in the hallways will permeate our classrooms. Have you checked out the display cases by the main office? How about the windows across from the SSC? More importantly are the terrific teaching and learning that is being supported through an increased focus on science, technology, engineering, math and the arts. More and more signs of STEAM are coming!
Congratulations

Best Behavior
"Teach Like a Champion" by Doug Lemov (see Panther Pride Weekly, August 29) includes an entire chapter filled with techniques to improve student behavior. One of the key distinctions he makes is to know whether a student is not following behavior expectations because they are being defiant or because they do not understand the expectation. I can hear the collective, "oh they know the expectations." Think about this: when you tell a class or group of students to "pay attention," what does that look like - specifically? Does that mean for them to be quiet? Does it mean all eyes on you? Does it mean pencils down? All of the above? Explicitly stating what the desired behavior looks like will help distinguish between those behaviors that are defiant and in need of a consequence OR lack of understanding which requires teaching.
If you would like to learn more about these techniques, please see me.
