Each day is a new beginning, the chance to do with it what should be done and not to be seen as simply another day to put in time. -Catherine Pulsifer
HOOT NEWS
NEW DATE FOR SATURDAY WORK DAY:
May 19th is not going to work for our campus work day. We are doing to move it to Saturday May 12. Hill Elementary will be providing breakfast and Davis Elementary is providing hot dogs for lunch! Our vertical team schools are here to help!
Please mark your calendars for MAY 12th 8:30 -2:00.
MOVE:
The move will begin on June 1st (not the 31st). We need to be packed and ready to move on this day.
I have ordered more blue bins. I am asking about flat / poster holder type boxes. And, I am asking about file boxes for filing cabinet stuff.
Need labels? PAT has labels on her desk for you.
What else do you need? Don't hesitate to let us know what you need.

* Report Cards go home on the last day of school, Wednesday, May 30.
* Teachers will get an extra copy to file in the student’s cumulative folder before we move to Lucy Read.
Promoted/Placed/Retained
This task is time sensitive and critical to the End of Year processes as it is additional information included on the final Report Cards.
Promoted – All students are automatically promoted. These are students that are at grade level and ready to move on to the next grade for the 2018-2019 school year. For these students, no task will need to be completed in TEAMS.
Retained – If a student is retained, a meeting must be held and documentation is required. These are students that will stay in their current grade for the 2018-2019 school year.
Placed – If a student in Placed, a meeting must be held and documentation is required. These are students that are on the cusp of being retained, but a committee met to decide that they would be ‘Placed’ in the next grade for the 2018-2019 school year
MOVING NEWS!
We have seven weeks left in this school year. Please reflect on the schedule for your classroom move that I provided a few weeks ago or make your own. It's time to pack, pack, pack! When is the move happening? June 1st - June 4th. Doss items will be moved to the cafeteria at Lucy Read while Lucy Read's items are moved to individual campuses. Starbucks Code Word: BOXES. The movers will be finished moving Doss on June 4th!
UNWANTED ITEMS:
Do you have furniture that you don't want? Label it "warehouse" and place in the hallway or outside of your portable. Do you have stuff that you need to give away? We'll put the teacher give away table back out.
PERSONAL ITEMS:
Start taking home personal items that aren't needed.
BLUE BINS AND BOXES:
Blue bins that are full can be stored in room 103. The bins should be piled four high on the rolley cart. We are in the process of getting some large flat boxes for posters etc. and bigger boxes for bulky items. LABEL EVERYTHING!
PHONES:
Remember, you will personally take your phone with you this summer. Please place the phone in a cardboard box and label.
CELEBRATING EARTH DAY AT DOSS
Sunday, April 22nd is Earth Day! Doss will be celebrating the week with an Earth friendly theme for each day. Morning announcements (prepared by Mr. Jones and the PALS) will invite Doss students to do their part to keep planet Earth's environment clean. The AM topics will include:
4/23 - Recyclable Items
4/24 - What Does Reduce, Reuse, Recycle Mean?
4/25 - Recycling vs. Composting (they can emphasize the "No Trash" lunch on TH!)
4/26 - What's Upcycling?
EARTH DAY BLAST
A school-wide message is expected this weekend inviting all Doss Owls to pitch in with the following suggestions for each day:
- Monday - Be Idle Free! – Parents may turn off engines while waiting to drop off or pick up.
- Tuesday - Recycling/Reuse day - spend 10 minutes on a spring cleaning project focused on what can be recycled and reused.
- Wednesday - Bike or Walk to school and reduce local emissions.
- Thursday - Pack a "no trash" lunch (only reusable containers or fully recyclable or compostable materials). Try to recycle or compost all of your waste at home that day!
- Friday - Less Litter! Bring a small shopping bag in your backpack and pocket - pick up any small trash in your path for a day and WEAR GREEN!
Thanks for helping our community be cleaner and greener.

NURSE NOTES
After yesterday's emergency situation and other issues, I wanted to reach out to you guys about protocols on sending kids to the health office. We need to be able to keep the kids safe and treat kids who are really sick or hurt but recently it has become very difficult for both Candace and I to do this. Here are 3 tips from me and the rest are the protocols on when to send the children.
- Minor injuries such as paper cuts, blisters, and minor abrasions can be handled in the classroom. Have the student wash the area with soap and water and apply a band-aid from the “Ouch Bag”. If you need to restock on your ouch bags please stop by we have more than enough band aids.
- Please only send students for an ice pack if you see an area of redness, swelling, or bruising from the injury. Minor bumps that leave no mark, as well as old injuries, do not need an ice pack. A wet paper towel may be applied in the classroom.
- Please talk with your kids about going to health office during lunch (they tend to go during this time without yall knowing).
Examples of appropriate referrals to the health room are:
- New injury with obvious bleeding, bruising, redness, swelling or deformity.
- New complaint of sore throat, earache, neck pain, possible fever, vomiting (if you see them vomit, not b/c they said they did), diarrhea or persistent cough.
- Complaints of asthma including shortness of breath, dry persistent cough and wheezing. (Send with another student)
- Students with seizure history that complain of seizure symptoms. (Send with adult)
- Any student that has bumped their head or has a suspected head injury. (Send with another student)
- Skin lesion that is red, swollen and/or draining
- Nosebleed that is not controlled in class.
- Suspected dental emergencies or injuries.
Examples of referrals that can be handled in the classroom include:
- Runny nose: provide tissue and encourage hand washing, tilt head slightly
- Paper cuts, blisters and old cuts that only require hand washing and a new band aid (Please use “ouch bag”. Refills available upon request)
- Requests for ice pack with no obvious bruise or recent injury with swelling: wet paper towel to affected area
- Complaints of stomachache or headache but student looks and acts fine: lay head down for 15 minutes in class
- Occasional cough that is not disruptive: sips of water
- stomach aches and headaches within last 30 minutes of school can be dealt with at home.
We are seeing over 40 kids a day with majority non-emergent problems and it is taking away from the kids who really need us. Every child who walks through our door we have to document what we did for them in our system so please be mindful of our time.
We love you guys and love keeping our kids healthy, thank you for working with us on this!

I need to collect, inventory, and pack all the AISD electronic equipment for the move. Teachers will be able to connect their teacher laptops to their projectors until the 1st of June. My general schedule is below. Please talk to me if you have any questions or concerns for your class.
May 14-18 Start to collect & pack Chromebooks, tablets, ipads, and other computers
