HAVE A FUN, SAFE AND RELAXING SPRING BREAK! SEE YOU ON APRIL 2ND!
March 22, 2024
A Message from the Principal
Dear Woodland Families,
Wow! Who would have thought that we would have so much snow on Beach Day?! The kids were decked out in tropical shirts, sunglasses, and their flower leis and enjoyed relaxing on their beach towel with a good book. We had so much fun "catching a 'title' wave" this month and celebrating our love for reading!
Students have also enjoyed having all of the mystery guest readers in their classrooms, including visits from Avondale Superintendent, Dr. James Schwarz, Board of Education Member Kelly Brault and of course lots of Moms, Dads, Grandmas and Grandpas. The students were so excited to have all of the visitors in their classrooms! Thank you to our Woodland community for taking the time out of your busy schedule to share your love of reading with all of our students.
When we return from Spring Break, we will enter our spring testing season with the MSTEP beginning on April 9th. During this demanding testing season, please make sure that your child is well rested and has a good breakfast every morning.
Remember that we have no school next week due to Spring Break. I hope you have safe travels if you are escaping the Michigan weather. Enjoy the time with your family and friends.
Enjoy your Spring Break,
Mrs. Katalin Rosinski
Principal

Solar Eclipse- Monday, April 8th
We have had many questions about the solar eclipse, which is happening on Monday, April 8th. The metro Detroit area will see a partial eclipse between 2:41pm and 3:46pm, per NASA, with max coverage of 99.2% at 3:14pm.
The Woodland PTO has generously purchased solar eclipse glasses for all of our students. Thank you to our PTO! It is extremely important that students are aware that they should not stare/look without appropriate eyewear at the eclipse
On eclipse day, we will not have afternoon recess outside however, teachers may take their class out for a structured science activity using the eclipse glasses. We will also be doing indoor dismissal to ensure that students are not looking up at the sky without their eclipse glasses.
If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Mrs. Rosinski at 248-537-6900.
Grade Level Placement
After we return from Spring Break, I begin the planning process for next school year. I would like to share our procedures for moving students to their next grade level teacher for the 2024-2025 school year. We use a comprehensive procedure to determine grade/teacher placement. The process is outlined below:
- Teachers will fill out a student profile on each student in his/her class. The profile will allow teachers to identify each student’s strengths and needs.
- A team consisting of the grade level teachers, principal, and other pertinent staff such as the specials teachers, reading specialist, special education personnel, and/or ELL teacher will meet to place students into classes based on information from the profile sheets, and any additional input. The class lists will be constructed so that each class is relatively equal with regards to the following factors:
- Balance of male and female students.
- A range of reading, writing, and math abilities in each room.
- Consideration of learning needs.
- Separation of behavior conflicts.
- Balance of students with strong leadership qualities.
- Balance of students with independent study habits.
In analyzing all these factors we strive to develop balanced classrooms, which will be minimally affected by the addition of new students as they move into our area.
We do not accept specific teacher requests. Parents are cautioned not to request placement or non-placement based on what they may have heard about a teacher from other parents. Just as each child is unique, so is each teacher. An experience that other parents may have had with their child may be totally different from what your child could have with the same teacher. However, if there is a concern, parents may send an email with information regarding their child’s learning style and specific educational needs. I need to receive this information by April 26th.
Please help your child understand that he/she may not be with the same friends next year, or with a teacher a sibling may have had. Help them know they are capable of working with new friends and teachers, that they are skillful youngsters, and able to handle new situations. Creating a mindset with your child to develop new friendships is imperative to a successful transition to middle school later in his/her educational journey. That mindset doesn’t just begin in fifth grade. It is a mindset that needs to be developed early on. It can help ensure a smooth transition now and in the future. We value your help and appreciate your consideration.
Thank you for your time and interest regarding the Grade Placement Procedures. We are looking forward to using this process and feel confident that each student will be placed in a classroom that will allow him/her to have a successful school year!

Positivity Project
This week, we worked on Identifying & Appreciating the Good in Others for our P2 Positivity Project. This means that it's important to deliberately work to identify and appreciate others' character strengths. Identifying and appreciating the good in others is a core element of the Other People Mindset. This isn't always what comes naturally. Often it is easier to blame others for our problems or find flaws in others to use as excuses for our own jealousy, bitterness, or resentment. The problem is that this negativity usually leads to problems - for ourselves, for the other person, and for our relationships.
Why Does It Matter?
Identifying and appreciating the good in other people helps you see the world through a more positive and less threatening lens. If you're constantly seeing the negative traits of people, you're going to think the world is comprised of bad people and you're going to operate from a defensive posture. This isn't to say that we should be naive or see the world, and its people, through "rose-colored glasses."
To practice and encourage the character strength of integrity with your child, please visit the Positivity Project’s P2 for Families (password: P2), where together you will watch a video, read a quote, and talk about the answers to three questions.
Next week, we will focus on our P2 Trait, Perspective.
Lost & Found
Woodland's Lost and Found is located by the gym and cafeteria. If your child is missing a jacket, sweatshirt, lunchbox, etc., please remind your child to look in the Lost and Found. Please plan on taking a peek ASAP because all unclaimed items will be donated after Parent-Teacher Conferences on April 3rd.
