Jim Crow
- not actually a person
- 19th century minstrel song that stereotyped African Americans
- "Jim Crow" personified the radical segregation and oppression set in by the national government
Laws and Etiquette
- Jim Crow laws- not the same as etiquette; laws restricted blacks legally (restricted water fountains and bus sections)
- Jim Crow etiquette- norms blacks had to practice (never comment on a woman's appearance, never insult a white person)
Why Jim Crow Laws Were Created
- Whites wanted to stay superior to blacks.
- 13th, 14th, and 15th amendments- gave blacks the same protection as whites,
- Rutherford B. Hayes- after he was elected, southern and bordering states restricted black's freedoms once again
- Supreme Court- supported racial laws; legitimized the laws through the ruling of Plessy v. Ferguson
Jim Crow Laws Effect on Black Americans
- limited interaction between races
- riots including mass lynchings
- Arthur Raper- investigated lynchings, concluded one-third were falsely accused
