EXCELLENCE, INNOVATION, CHARACTER
Week of May 1, 2017
PRINCIPAL'S CORNER
Dear Friends, Families, and FSA Supporters...
MAP testing is now underway, and we appreciate your support as our precious students have an opportunity to showcase all they have learned this year. A detailed overview of our spring MAP testing (including our bell schedule), is listed below.
The week ahead is filled with lots of exciting events! We are preparing for a fantastic annual STEAM Day celebration on Thursday, May 4, as well as a much-anticipated "Try DI" Day this Saturday, May 6, here at our FSA campus. This awesome event, which is co-sponsored by Ford, is a great way to reconnect with friends and/or family as you help design a car of the future. Additional details, including a registration link, can be found below.
We also exhale in gratitude as many of our precious middle school students returned at 4:30 a.m. Monday morning after an unforgettable weekend trip to New York. Some photos from this journey are included in this issue, and we hope you enjoy seeing them as much as we did.
Please also double-check FSA Connect for updates, and make a special notation of our many end-of-year festivities that students and families have come to know and love. These celebrations simply won't be the same without you, and we hope you are able to join us.
Here's to another amazing week ahead and finishing our school year strong.
With Warmest Regards,
Mr. Kenan Sener
Principal
Motivational Quote of the Week
Winning Streak Continues for FSA Math Team
Congratulations to FSA's Math Team who placed third in the state at the 41st Annual State Mathematics Tournament on Saturday, April 29, in Macon. Students Vishaal Ram, Tyler Hecht, Charlie Furniss, and Holden Watson (shown in photograph, left to right) continued their incredible winning streak under coach, Sema Duzyol.
At the state competition, competitors individually complete a 50-question multiple-choice test and a speed round followed by teams working together to complete a set of a dozen challenging problems. The questions come from topics included in the standard high school curriculum up to and including calculus, as well as topics not traditionally found in the curriculum, such as number theory and combinatorics.
The Georgia Council of Teachers of Mathematics (GCTM) sponsors the annual state math championship. Schools are invited to send four of their best math team students to compete. Schools earn an invitation to the state math tournament based on their performance at other tournaments throughout the state. Schools from all Georgia High School Association (GHSA) classifications as well as non-GHSA schools compete together.
“We make every effort to invite the schools with the best math teams in Georgia so that this is truly a battle of champions,” says Tournament Director and GCTM Vice-President of Competitions, Dr. Chuck Garner.
The tournament was held at the Middle Georgia State University (MGSU) Conference Center in Macon. GCTM, MGSU, and AT&T of Georgia sponsored the event. Mu Alpha Theta, the national mathematics honor society, made cash prizes available to the top three individual winners.
At the conclusion of the state tournament, the students selected for the All-State Math Team are announced. Fulton Science Academy students Charlie Furniss, Vishaal Ram, and Holden Watson were selected for this team. This team will represent the state of Georgia at the nation-wide American Regions Math League (ARML) tournament on June 3.
Great job, students!
Cheetah Math Competition Results
The FSA Math team continues its trend of competing and bringing home awards at every level! This past weekend, FSA's Math Team competed at the 8th Annual Cheetah Cup Math Competition, a Math Competition for 4th, 5th and 6th Graders at Creek View Elementary School in Alpharetta, GA.
Our 6th-grade team (Richard Y., Arnav A., Shivam J., Pranav D., Tejaz A.) received 2nd place as a team and our 5th-grade team (Tejash G., Nick A., Shreshta G., Ipsita B., Eric Y. ) received 3rd place as a team.
Additionally, two of our 6th graders, Arnav A. and Shivam J., tied for the championship with a perfect score of 10 at the individual level; one of 4th graders, Tejash G., placed 3rd at the individual level.
Congratulations to our students & FSA Math Teachers! We are proud of them! Keep up the good work!!

FSA DRAMA CLUB PRESENTS "THE AMERICAN HEARTBEAT"
End of year trip to NYC
After a long bus ride north, students spent two full days in the city seeing a variety of historic landmarks ranging from the Statue of Liberty to Central Park; from the National Math Museum to the Brooklyn Bridge.
In addition to an exciting itinerary coordinated by GO Educational Tours, some students also had a surprise in store when they arrived in Times Square to find musician Katy Perry serving pie from a local food truck. The event, which was scheduled by Perry's agent, brought a tremendous amount of enthusiasm to our students.
We would like to thank our wonderful parent chaperones for their involvement and support and for making opportunities like this one possible for our students.
FSA CERTIFIED as NWF SCHOOLYARD HABITAT
Fantastic news! The National Wildlife Federation (NWF), America's largest wildlife conservation and education organization, has named Fulton Science Academy as a "Certified Wildlife Habitat" site!
This honor was made possible thanks to FSA's brand new Environmental Preservation Club which was formed in January 2017 thanks to a generous donation from the Novak Family Foundation. Their son, Aidan, is photographed here and is an active member of the club.
FSA's Environmental Club Advisor, Sharon Butler, commented, "I love working with this group; the kids love nature and are being raised by families who are teaching them how important it is to help conserve the ecosystem. The club's goal is to encourage responsible land use and to help pollinators and other wildlife thrive here on FSA's beautiful grounds."
Currently, the club is deep in the throes of several projects, including analysis of how to safely reduce the population of mosquito larvae that reside in the campus pond. They also will work closely with campus architects to preserve green space during the campus expansion and will assist with the construction and implementation of FSA's first greenhouse, which we hope to unveil in August 2017 (we are awaiting permits).
We are so honored to receive this award, and can't express our appreciation enough to the Novak Family, to Mrs. Butler, and to our wonderful students who are involved in this voluntary after-school club. If your child would like to join FSA"s Environmental Conservation Club, please email Mrs. Butler at LandDsmom@aol.com. Thank you! #fsacares

Student Spotlight - Meet Madeline T.
Congratulations to FSAPS third grader, Madeline T., who competed in the state gymnastics meet in Emerson, GA, on Saturday, April 23 with her gymnastics team, "Team Northwind."
The event brought teams from all over the state of Georgia and was the final meet of the season.
Madeline performed beautifully! In her age group, she tied for 3rd in bars, 4th in the beam, and tied for 5th in the all-around, with a score of 37.75 (out of 40).
Great job, Madeline. We love to see you doing what you love and loving what you do. Congratulations on an amazing season! #fsacares
The Character Ed Trait for May is HOPE
It is so important to teach HOPE to students especially before the summer begins. We want our students to look forward to their summer and to look forward to the next school year. Researchers have found that students who are high in hope have greater academic success, stronger friendships, and demonstrate more creativity and better problem-solving. They also have lower levels of depression and anxiety and are less likely to drop out from school.
What does it mean to have hope?
1. Believing you will be successful.
2. Believing what you desire is possible.
3. Being optimistic and positive about your future.
How can we demonstrate hope in our lives?
1. Having a positive attitude, even when facing difficult situations.
2. Being willing to work hard and always doing your best.
3. Pursuing your goals and following your dreams.
4. Helping and encouraging others when they are down.
Who are some people we know that show hope?
1. Your parents, grandparents, school teachers and staff.
2. Friends or family members who are dealing with illness or a difficult situation.
3. Helen Keller, Henry Ford, Anne Frank, Martin Luther King Jr., Thomas Edison, Harriet Tubman, and others.
Closing Comment: Hope is believing your dreams will come true, It’s knowing you'll be successful in all that you do. You will need to work hard and have patience too, But when you have hope each day is brand new. Have hope for your tomorrow!
“Keep your face to the sunshine and you cannot see the shadow. It’s what sunflowers do.” ~Helen Keller

IMPORTANT TESTING INFORMATION!!! Upcoming MAP Testing Schedule and bell times
The MAP testing period is an important time of year for our students. Your support at home can help set our children up for success. Please make sure your children are well rested, well fed, and that they arrive at school on time. Our goal, always, is to encourage our students, reduce any test-taking anxiety, and provide an environment for them that is positive and stress-free.
Several teachers have provided pre-test practice sheets and assessment tools to help you (and them) better identify areas that children may wish to review prior to their testing. If you have specific questions, please email your child's teacher(s).
To minimize interruption and provide our precious students with the best testing environment possible, we ask that all families please try to schedule routine appointments outside their child's posted MAP testing times. Please also be aware that lunch times will be slightly skewed as we adapt to a different schedule during testing times. Thank you in advance for your support!

Dr. Erkan's and Mrs. Kurt's Math Geniuses Club
Little geniuses love being challenged by fun activities every week in Math Geniuses Club. The part that our kids like the most is that we surprise them with new tasks weekly to help them develop their problem solving and critical thinking skills. Our students learn to cooperate, collaborate, and communicate with their peers; create solutions, models, and prototypes in Math Geniuses club. Some of the projects were as follows:
- Paper Tower: Building the highest paper tower staying the longest using index cards.
- Pattern play: 40 brightly-colored wooden blocks in a variety of shapes and 40 different pattern cards to solve. This game helps develop a wide variety of skills, including basic math concepts, fine motor skills, symmetry, color sorting, and problem solving.
- Straw Challenge: Creating various structures or prototypes using straws and tape.

Home Visits - A Fun Way to meet your teachers!
Home visits are a casual way for your child to spend time with his/her teacher in the comfort of their home. Teachers enjoy having a chance to see children in this comfortable environment, doing whatever makes them most happy and spend time with children and their parents outside of a regular school day.
Simply email junal@fultonscienceacademy.org with some suggested dates/times, as well as your students' name(s) and homeroom assignments. Ms. Unal will be in touch to confirm final details.
