What We're Reading: VPL Book Chats
Imagine the poetry of Ted Hughes meets the storytelling of John Irving! I give you: "I Cheerfully Refuse" by Leif Enger! It has been a while since I read a truly well-written novel and Enger nailed it with this dystopian masterpiece. Rainy, the main character, sets off on a small boat on Lake Superior after his wife is murdered searching for, not only her, but a meaning to the madness that surrounds him. I had a hard weekend and found solace in almost every chapter of this novel. Enger manages to tackle grief and longing with such beautifully written words that I couldn't put this book down. And when I finally did, I slept soundly. Happy reading, friends!

London 1883- the veil separating the world of the living and the dead has begun to thin, and violet eyed mediums are able to commune with the dead within the Royal Speaker Society. However, 16-year-old Gloria Bell would rather extract her own violet eyes in order to avoid becoming a subservient Speaker wife. Gloria doesn't feel comfortable in her own skin as a woman and often refers to herself as "Silas." Gloria struggles with autism, and the tutors she grew up with tried, in vain, to hide her condition. She strives to be a surgeon one day, like her older brother George, and has even practiced on slaughtered pigs. Following an unsuccessful arranged marriage, Gloria is diagnosed with "Veil Sickness"- a strange disease causing violet eyed women to descend into madness - and is sent to Braxton's Finishing School and Sanitorium where she is to learn to be a proper lady and wife. Those who succeed become eligible wives, and those who don't, mysteriously disappear. Ghosts of the missing students start to appear to Gloria, begging for help; thus she must take it upon herself to expose the truth of Braxton's or die trying. 11/10 would definitely recommend. It was quite an intense read, but definitely worth it in the end.
