Welcome to your 2nd 9 weeks! Keep working hard and finish out the second semester strong. Read on for information on upcoming events, your GPA, and different college options.
Taking Care of your Emotional Well Being

North Carolina School of Science and Math and the Middle College
- NC School of Science and Math offers both residential and online programs for academically talented students in STEM fields. New for next year, a second campus in Morganton so double the students admitted! Come find out more on Nov. 18th at 9:30 am in room 310.
- The Middle College at Durham Tech allows you to immerse yourself in the college experience and accelerate your path towards an Associates Degree. They will be hosting information sessions in November and December. Learn more and register here.
Bank of America Student Leaders Program
- Paid 8 week summer internship program
- Paired with a local nonprofit for 8 weeks and conclude with a week long summit in Washington D. C.

Calculating your GPA
- Your numerical grades are converted to a 4.0 scale
- A=4, B=3, C=2, D=1, F=0
- Add up these numbers and divide by how many credits you've attempted (most 10th graders have 8 credits at the end of freshman year, and 11th graders have 16)
- Your honors and AP/CCP courses are weighted
- Honors-add .5
- AP or CCP-add 1.0
College Options
65% of all jobs now require some education beyond high school. When most students think of college, they think of the traditional 4-year bachelors degree. However, there are many options for college degrees and credentials, and some take as little as a few months. Here are your options defined:
- Certificate and Diploma-These options take as little as a few months to around a year and the courses are directly related to job skills. 18% of new jobs will require this credential and courses are available at a community college.
- Associates degrees take approximately 2 years to complete and are available at a community college. 12% of new jobs will require this degree.
- Bachelors degrees take approximately four years and are available at public and private colleges. You can also complete the first two years at a community college and transfer. 24% of new jobs will require a Bachelors degree.
