Grease, the Musical
An eight-year run on Broadway and two subsequent revivals, along with innumerable school and community productions place Grease among the world's most popular musicals. Save the date for Lake Shore High School's production of Grease taking place May 16-18th!
Purchase your tickets for $12 online ($15 at the door) here.
Here is Rydell High's senior class of 1959: duck-tailed, hot-rodding "Burger Palace Boys" and their gum-snapping, hip-shaking "Pink Ladies" in bobby sox and pedal pushers, evoking the look and sound of the 1950s in this rollicking musical. Head "greaser" Danny Zuko and new (good) girl Sandy Dumbrowski try to relive the high romance of their "Summer Nights" as the rest of the gang sings and dances its way through such songs as "Greased Lightnin'," "It's Raining on Prom Night," "Alone at the Drive-In Movie" recalling the music of Buddy Holly, Little Richard, and Elvis Presley that became the soundtrack of a generation.
Bonus: Tickets for Rodgers Elementary's Drama Club production of "The Little Mermaid Jr" can be purchased here.

Care Solace
April is Stress Awareness Month—a timely reminder to prioritize mental health and well-being. In the midst of academic demands and daily responsibilities, it's crucial for both students and staff to take moments throughout the day to reset and practice mindfulness.
Remember to take some breaks. Step outside, take a few deep breaths, or engage in a quick mindfulness exercise. Your well-being is paramount, and these small breaks can make a significant difference in managing stress. Allow these moments to rejuvenate your mind, so you can have a focused and productive study session.
Remember, your mental health matters, and taking proactive steps to manage stress is a sign of strength. If you or someone you know needs support, Care Solace is available 24/7/365 for confidential mental health care coordination:
.
- Call 888-515-0595. Multilingual support is available 24/7/365.
- Visit caresolace.com/lsps and either search on your own OR click “Book Appointment” for assistance by video chat, email, or phone.
Take the time you need, practice mindfulness, and thrive.
Autism Acceptance Month
Lake Shore Public Schools works to #CelebrateDifferences for Autism Acceptance Month and we are so appreciative of our students who chose to participate. That's truly the #OtherPeopleMatter philosophy!
Positivity Project
P2 Calendar
Under the guiding principles of our districtwide initiative, the Positivity Project, the #PositivityInAction mindset is our top priority. Because of our goal to inspire students to build positive relationships and become their best selves, we invite you to follow this Positivity Project Calendar. Note: We have made a few changes to this calendar; All adjustments are located on our District Events Calendar.
FAIRNESS
People with the character strength of fairness believe that all people have value. They approach situations with an unbiased mindset and treat everyone with respect.
Coaches are always analyzing player performances, demonstrating skills, providing encouragement and honesty with both players and parents. They teach fair play to their teammates and opponents. This includes modeling and demanding good sportsmanship. Winning isn't everything. Accepting bad calls by refs, treating every player the same, and applying team rules to all players is. But there's one thing that is universally fair to all: Hard work.
Each new day is a new opportunity to improve yourself. Take it and make the most of it.
Track coach Ms. Phillips has provided her athletes with Spring conditioning opportunities after school. A workout is scheduled 3x per week inside our upgraded and newly renovated, state-of-the-art weight room.
Under the direction of James Rogers, LSHS new head football coach, 30 athletes were completing calisthenics exercises, a form of strength training that utilizes an individual's body weight as resistance to perform multi-joint, compound movements with little or no equipment.
This Lake Shore Public Schools investment improves athletic performance and benefits overall health. It reduces the risks of injury, increases strength, contributes to agility, quickness, and power, and optimizes and improves movement.
Added to the weight room were new dumbbell sets, lifting racks, cardio equipment, kettlebells and therapy bands. Space has been optimized to include 12 stations for lifting. An outdoor turfed training area was added to allow athletes to work on additional exercises and include baseball and softball pitching.
It is our hope that our Strength and Conditioning Physical Education classes will explode with enrollment as students of all shapes, sizes, and athletic ability choose wellness through fitness.
Athletic Coordinator Rich Bowers would like to see all coaches take advantage of the weight room, which currently opens at 6:30am and is available well into the evening hours year-round. He said, "Our coaching staff and teams are required to use this facility for practice. It has become a norm and part of our culture."
We are truly grateful for our strong team of fall, winter, and spring coaching staff who teach moral ethics through modeling good sportsmanship and fairness: https://shoriansports.com/staff-directory.
HUMOR
People with the character strength of humor like to laugh and bring smiles to other people. And the best way to bring out the laughter and smiles is by reliving Spring Break 2024 through these photographs.
Connor and Clare Moore had a staycation this year and made the most of it. A trip to Frankenmuth and the waterpark, burning off some steam in the rage room, a birthday trip to Dave and Busters, and Connor's second solo Cessna flight brought joy to this family! Kristin Woods had a blast in Chicago while The Wright Family visited Legoland, Sea Life, and Rainforest Cafe!
The Schornak Family experienced indoor rock climbing and hiking in Grand Ledge and the Javenkowski Family had lots of family fun at a Pistons game and a trip to Belle Isle. Reagan and Payton Edwards swam with the dolphins and the Hovis Family visited Myrtle Beach! Serenity Chance, Susie Caputo and Juliet Reddick played at Serenity's house and put together a national geographic marble run.
These are just a few of the many examples of smiles and laughter shared on Spring Break 2024.
Looking forward, we are excited to celebrate Purpose (4/15-19) and Appreciation of Beauty & Excellence (4/22-26).
Inspiration
Mathematics and Statistics Awareness Month
April is Mathematics and Statistics Awareness Month! Since its origin in 1986, the goal is to increase the level of interest, appreciation, and understanding of mathematics and statistics.
All three elementary schools are participating in celebrating mathematics through multiple problem-solving and critical thinking tasks at their age level. These problems have been created to help children think about numbers and math differently. We invite you to watch this kickoff video.
We also want to encourage families to participate in simple everyday activities that promote mathematical thinking. These activities can include baking, building, playing with specific blocks or other toys, and board or card games. Students will participate in a 4 week challenge that includes 4 weekly tasks. Each week students will complete a task using a Google form that will be sent digitally by the school. Students will submit the form to enter the weekly drawing! Each week a student will be entered into a drawing and picked from the pool of correct entries. If picked, he/she will win a game that promotes thinking about math concepts. Each game provides families with the opportunity to have fun with problem-solving at home.
S.T.E.A.M. Teacher Mr. Gardiner from Masonic Heights Elementary was excited to help with this challenge. With Mrs. Manor's 1st grade class and assistance from Elementary Math Coach Mrs. Spriet, the team solved this Problem of the Week:
In September, the students practice lining up in a straight line. When the teacher counts the students from the front of the line, starting at 1, Alex is number 14. When the teacher counts the students from the back of the line, starting at 1, Alex is number 8. How many total students are in the line?
Gardiner and Spriet have made Number Talks, short daily exercises aimed at building number sense, part of classroom routines while supporting colleagues.
While Cherysh Clark used blocks to help her visualize a solution, Hendrix MacWilliams used a traditional pencil and paper drawing.
At the very end of the month, any student who has submitted correct answers for all problems will be put into another drawing for a board game that encourages families to do math together at home! Each grade level will have a separate drawing for a winner. Both Cheryish and Hendrix submitted 21 as their answer and will have a chance to win!
To learn more about this exciting opportunity as well as supplemental math at-home activities, visit https://docs.google.com/document/d/15pazUx-La4oUpWGxF8mp-gLd3wQrSJT0KDZoqANOJAs/.
Bonus: In Mr. Coffey's Algebra I class at Lake Shore High School, students are matching graphics and tables to the correct linear equations and in Ms. Phillips' Probability and Statistics class, students created carnival games where they were required to calculate all chances of winning and losing plus expected values and fairness. Using fake money, students kept track of game and individual earnings and losses.
Team Junior Fidelis Morha, Senior Briana Koontz, and Sophomore Avery Ortiz created Dice Vault. The rules were simple: Participants selected a colored cube from the Mario question box. If red, from 6 different options, and rolled a 1, they won $100. If any other color, they won $5. As a business, they calculated a profit of $1.86 per customer. Ms. Phillips earned the $100 on her first attempt. That's one lucky teacher! #MathStatMonth
Safety Patrol
Safety starts with our students, but what is the job of our Safety Patrol?
Safety Patrol members from our elementary schools contribute to the 654,000 students nationwide who are helping keep other students safe on their way to and from school. Our Patrollers direct peers, teaching them about traffic safety, protect students from hazards of crossing roads, and serve as role models, helping inside classrooms or hallways, too!
Safety Patrol members, like fifth graders Charlotte Partridge and Eva Seymour at Masonic Heights Elementary, love talking with peers, being their first smile of the day at school, and of course, ensuring safety. They said, "We applied (for this position) because we love helping people."
Charlotte explained, "As an aunt to 5 kids myself, it is rewarding to help Kindergarteners complete work, open breakfast items, and pack up." Eva continued, "I remember when I was their age and splashed my fruit cups all over me. I will not let this happen to the kids I help."
Thank you to our Safety Patrol teams for watching over us this year!
Innovation
STEAM Empowerment
The most important thing is to never stop questioning.
High Touch High Tech delivers quality STEM activities for kids. Their educational and enriching programs for all students at Violet Elementary ignite a child's natural curiosity about science, and help to build problem-solving skills, self-esteem and the confidence to try something new.
High Touch High Tech scientist Rocket Ryan converted Mrs. Hoehing's elementary classroom at Violet into a Living Laboratory, fostering a lifelong love of science.
Rocket Ryan discussed gravity with students and designed stations that helped them use teamwork and collaboration to understand and feel the force of something spinning, to test friction, to beat gravity, to add mass to make balloons go down, and to learn how many miles a Q-tip can be thrown across the moon. These were ingenious stops that caused many smiles and laughter.
At the secondary level, Broken Drill Bits, Lake Shore High School's robot, finished 16 out of 30 at Troy High School Competition. LSHS was in 14th place in qualifying and 7th out of 8th in playoffs at Sterling High School.
Team Captain Simon Kozak is proud to be part of the team for 5 years. He said, "I love creativity, problem-solving, and the overall competition. Ideas branched off the original kit and, with little time and materials, we created a crafty design and name for our robot: Howard."
Their mission is to empower the youth to learn engineering skills and processes while implementing business management principles through hands-on experiences.
There are so many reasons why kids should learn robotics and this article summarizes them in a list of 10.
Celebration
District K-12 Art Show
Thank you for joining us at our District K-12 Art Show on Thursday, April 4th from 6-8:00pm inside Lake Shore High School's Auditorium. We were excited to celebrate our student artists and continue to ask that you share your photos using #LSArtAttack and #myLSPS.
Approximately 20-30 pieces, 150 in total, were displayed from each building, hand-selected based on exemplary skills, creativity, and innovative ideas.
This includes work from Lake Shore High School's Julian Smith, four-time Scholastic Gold Key winner. An article from Staff Writer Alison Braun of the Shoreline is featured here.
Please watch Julian's Art Show recap video here.
Fifth grader Brooklynn Tolliver at Masonic Heights Elementary just won 1st place for her artwork that will be placed on the front cover of the 2023-24 Yearbook! That's a big deal.
Thank you Courtney Dmochowski for taking on the role of District K-12 Art Show Coordinator. Mrs. Dmochowski currently teaches Art classes at Kennedy Middle School.
Bonus: Lake Shore Public Schools invited art students at Kennedy Middle School to show off their creative side by participating in a Tiny Art Show. Participants illustrated a canvas using the theme “Sailin' in the Shores," sponsored by Balalamenti-Ferlito Orthodontics. Their sailboats will be gifted to teachers in May as part of Teacher Appreciation Day!

Athlete of the Week
Sophia VanDenstorm
Congratulations to AOTW Sophia VanDenstorm, member of the Varsity Softball team at Lake Shore High School. Coach Puvalowski shared her contributions with us:
"Sophia had 14 strike outs in the game and gave up only 1 earned run. We won 6-4. She also had the game winning RBI!"
