Winter/Spring Sports Physicals
If your student is planning to play a winter or spring sport and they have not yet had a physical exam for this school year, please make an appointment with their regular health care provider as soon as possible! Health care providers in our area are very busy this time of year, and even more so now with additional COVID concerns, so it's important to make your appointments in advance.
While New York State waived the requirement for fall sports, going forward it is unlikely they will continue to waive it, and we cannot guarantee that we will be able to do physicals in school as we have done in the past.
If you have any questions or concerns about this, please contact athletic director John Burdick at jburdick@lakeplacidcsd.net.

Grab and Go Breakfasts- Our food service staff has "Grab and Go" breakfasts available at each entrance every morning. Students will be able to grab their breakfast choice and proceed to their 1st-period class.

Implicit Bias
I will confess; I am biased. That is not much of a confession, really. We are all biased. It is part of being human. The form of bias I am talking about is Implicit Bias, which has been studied by psychologists and other researchers for about 25 years now. Implicit bias exists below our conscious awareness but can affect our perceptions of others, our attitudes and our behavior. We rely on implicit bias to make judgements in a world in which there is often too much information coming at us at once. We can’t process it all consciously so we rely on automatic systems, and that includes implicit bias. The problem comes when implicit bias influences us to misjudge or mistreat others based on factors such as race, gender, sexual identity, age, the list goes on. This is all done very quickly, automatically, and out of consciousness, and it is often against our better judgement and conscious beliefs.
Although there is not a lot of research on how to effectively combat implicit biases, as a first step it may help to bring them to conscious awareness, then we can examine our biases rationally with the thinking part of our brain and make a plan to deal with them. So how can we identify a bias that is not conscious? One way is the Implicit Association Test (link below). Give it a try. Once we begin to work on identifying implicit biases we are on our way to reducing their effects on our perceptions, attitudes, and behaviors.
