Curriculum Corner
This week, we will are beginning to develop the characters of our story and the struggles and motivations they will face in our stories.
Reading:
The first unit in reading will cover realistic fiction. I will be reading Fish in a Tree by Lynda Mullaly Hunt as my mentor text. Students will be expected to have their own reading book within that genre that they will be reading independently, conferring with me, and practicing reading strategies while they read. This week we are focusing on the topics of using debate to discuss our reading and using text evidence to support ideas.
Indiana History:
This week, we will continue studying economics. We will be focusing on how Indiana's transportation system supports the economy and trading with other countries. They will have a quiz over vocabulary and concepts from their notes on Friday, October 12.
Science:
This week, we will be observing our plants and mealworms. We are supposed to be continuing our brine shrimp experiment, but so far none have hatched. We will try again with some different water and see if we can get them to hatch before we leave for break! I passed out study guides today. Their study guides are due Thursday, October 11 and the test will be Friday, October 12.
Math:
We have started Unit 2 in math. This week, we will be focusing on factors, multiples, and prime and composite numbers.
STEPS to SIEW:
This year, student will be participating in a new curriculum called Second Step. At Stonegate, we will be referring to it as "Steps to Strong In Every Way." Every Friday, students will be participating in a lesson focused on social-emotional learning. This week, we will be focusing on having conversations and giving compliments.
Jog-A-Thon
Parent Teacher Conferences
The link for the e-day went live today. Students can begin working on it anytime and all work will be due by the end of the school day on Monday, October 8. They will not be given class time to work on it and will be given an unexcused absence if they do not complete their work. I went over the module with them in class today and answered questions, but please do not hesitate to let me know if you have any other questions.
If you do not have access to an electronic device or Wi-Fi at home, SGE has set in place the following accommodations:
- Friday, Oct. 5th from 2:30 – 3:30 – Students are able to stay after school to access a stand-alone device to complete their E-day assignment. SGE staff will support students during this time.
- Parent/Guardian transportation will need to be provided home. Student pick-up will be at Door #1/main entrance.
- Please simply reach out to your child’s teacher and s/he will be happy to assist you in getting you access to a stand-alone device.
