Joppa View Electronic Music Club
Electronic music is created and produced using a computer as an instrument. The musician uses a variety of devices including computers, synthesizers, drum machines, and samplers to produce tracks. Electronic Dance Music or EDM is the most popular idiom of electronic music. Multiple genres fall under the EDM category such as house, dubstep, techno, and trance.
The first ever electronic music club (EMC) here at Joppa View began on January 27, 2015. Currently, 40 fourth and fifth graders participate in EMC. The EMC students use Ableton’s Live software and Akai LKP25 MIDI controllers to create and produce their music.
Live is a software program that turns your computer into a full music production suite. It allows you to program drum groves using drum maps and melodies using the MIDI map. Students can also record live audio sounds and place these into their tracks. All of the music is completely original, composed and programmed by the students.
On March 13, 2015, the EMC students participated in a masterclass with Ableton specialist and electronic musician, Ben Casey. The students received an overview of how the Live software functions and how to use a midi controller to program sounds into a track.
Since this masterclass, the students have been working afterschool on their own music. They have learned how to create drum patterns by programming the sounds into a grid or drum map and have also been creating original melodies and recording these into Live using MIDI controllers. Students have also been developing their ear by studying important EDM tracks and learning basic DJ techniques such as scratching and sampling.
Please join us on Wednesday, May 27th at 6:30pm here at Joppa View for our first ever EDM Informance. Come out and hear each student’s original music as well as participating in interactive demonstrations presented by the ECM students.
