Principal's Message
Dear Campo Family,
This week May 4th- 8th is Teacher Appreciation Week. Please join us in thanking our amazing Campo Verde staff. You can show your appreciation and gratitude in several different ways during our current circumstances. A few examples include:
-A thoughtful email giving them a specific reason why you're thankful for them.

These are certainly unprecedented times, and during times such as these, we are reminded of the importance of gratitude and community. As a member of our GPS family, I am sincerely grateful for your continued support of our district, your school, and the continued education of your student(s). I know that we will get through this, together.
As we plan for the remainder of the school year, we continue to look for new ways to keep connected. In that light, I would like to welcome you to our new district newsletter, that will arrive in your inbox once a week, filled with updates and useful resources. We will also continue to connect with you via email, our website, and social media.

Project GradNite
Dear CVHS Parents and CVHS community members,
In past years the GradNite Booster club has sponsored the GradNite event the evening before
graduation and invited all graduating seniors to a fun evening spent with their classmates in a safe environment. Food, games, prizes! We have been able to host these evenings through event ticket sales and generous contributions from our Campo Verde High School families and community members. This year the celebration will look different, but our wish to acknowledge our senior’s achievements and wish them well as they start the next chapter of their lives remains the same! We are PROUD of our Class of 2020!
We are reaching out to you, our CVHS Community, for donations of cash, gift cards, or other gifts to be shared with our graduates. We need your help more than ever before. The GradNite Boosters have committed to providing scholarships and gift cards to be raffled off to students participating in National Senior Declaration Day and would like be able to share some extra surprises when they receive their diplomas. Your donations will help this happen!
Please contact Kim Hernandez at markim.h@icloud.com to coordinate donation pickup/delivery.
With the greatest of appreciation,
Project GradNite Boosters

U.S. News 2020 Best High Schools numerically ranked nearly 18,000 schools nationwide this year. The Best High Schools rankings, available online only, are produced in conjunction with RTI International, a global research firm. U.S. News doesn’t collect data directly from high schools – all data comes directly from official third-party sources. U.S. News receives AP and IB data directly from the College Board and International Baccalaureate, respectively, for use in the rankings. Class rank 2020 seniors
Class rank is required and used by colleges and universities on transcripts submitted for entrance evaluation and is based on the grades earned in classes that meet or exceed graduation requirements. Under usual circumstances, senior class rank is determined at the end of the 8th semester. Due to COVID-19, class rank for the 2019-2020 seniors will be determined at the end of their 7th semester. Using the Fall 2019 cumulative GPA as the class rank determination will ensure that students are not negatively impacted by current circumstances.

latest information
Right now, public health officials have made it clear it's not safe to gather students in one place. Many states have closed their schools for the rest of the academic year, and globally there are widespread school closures across 192 countries. As such, we won't be able to administer the SAT® and SAT Subject Tests™ as planned on June 6, 2020.
We'll ensure that you and all students have opportunities to take the SAT to make up for this spring's lost administrations. If it's safe from a public health standpoint, we'll provide weekend SAT administrations every month through the end of the calendar year, beginning in August. This includes a new administration in September, in addition to the previously scheduled tests.
In the unlikely event that schools don't reopen this fall, the College Board will provide a digital SAT for home use, much as we're delivering digital exams for three million Advanced Placement® students this spring. As we're doing with at-home AP® Exams, we would ensure that at-home SAT testing is simple; secure and fair; accessible to all; and valid for use in college admissions.
We're committed to giving you as many chances as we can to show your strengths to admissions officers. As we navigate this evolving situation, we're working closely with our partners in higher education to ensure you have what you need as you continue on your path to college.
We'll regularly update our website with new information. Thank you for your understanding. Our thoughts are with you during this unprecedented time.
Sincerely,
College Board

Advanced Placement (AP) Exams: National Testing Information
Administered on Each High School Campus
March 20, 2020, from College Board--As schools and communities navigate the unprecedented challenges posed by the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak, the health and safety of educators and students are the AP Program’s top priorities. Here is how the College Board is supporting schools:
Providing free remote learning resources
Investing in the development of a new at-home testing option
The solutions the College Board is providing is meant to be as simple and lightweight as possible for both students and teachers--without creating additional burdens for any stakeholders during this time.
Traditional face-to-face exam administrations will NOT take place for the 2019-2020 academic year.
Some students may want to take their AP exam(s) sooner rather than later, there will be two (2) different testing dates identified (not yet determined).
The full exam schedule, specific free-response question types that will be on each AP Exam, and additional testing details will be available by April 3, 2020.
The College Board will unlock any relevant free-response questions in AP Classroom for digital use so students may access all practice questions of the type that will appear on the upcoming exams.
The AP Program will invest heavily over the next weeks in the following ways:
For the 2019-2020 AP Exam Administration only, students can take a 45-minute online exam AT HOME. These exams are currently being developed.
In order to accommodate students across the nation, the AP Exam will only include topics and skills most AP teachers and students have already covered in class instruction by early March.
Colleges support this solution and are committed to ensuring that AP students receive the credit they have worked this school year to earn. Historically, colleges and universities have accepted a shortened AP Exam for college credit when groups of students have experienced emergencies.
Students will be able to take the streamlined, online AP Exams on any device they have access to--computer, tablet, or smartphone. Taking a photo of handwritten work will also be an option.
The College Board recognizes these digital AP Exams could cause some inequities and access issues for some low-income and rural students. Working with community partners, the College Board will invest so that all students have the tools and connectivity necessary to review AP content and take the online exam. Students who need mobile tools or support with connectivity may reach out directly to the College Board.
Test security is a concern for the College Board.
The exam questions are designed and administered in ways that prevent cheating. The College Board uses a range of digital security tools and techniques, including plagiarism detection software, to protect the integrity of the exams.
Scoring at-home work for an AP Exam is not new to the AP Program. Historically, the AP Program has received and scored at-home student work as part of the exams for the AP Computer Science Principles and AP Capstone courses.
March 16, 2020, from College Board--The AP Program is developing resources to help schools support student learning during extended closures, as well as a solution that would allow students to test at home, depending on the situation in May 2020. Additional information will be posted.

All NHS Service hours need to be completed by May 8, 2020
NHS Members:
Continue your Community Service requirements with the following Social Distancing Volunteer suggestions:
When possible, take a photo and upload on Google Classroom under Social Distancing Volunteering and record how long it took for your hours at: Second Semester NHS Hrs log, posted January 16th.
Check out the following:
· Free Rice - https://freerice.com/ Students take quizzes and every question they answer donates 10 grains of rice to the World Food Programme. Join our Campo Verde NHS Group with this Group code: QQ3D3FMP
From the website: How does Freerice work?
“As you play Freerice and answer questions right, advertisements appear on your screen. When you see one of these advertisements, you trigger a financial payment to the World Food Programme (WFP) to support its work saving and changing lives around the world.”
So, join our NHS group today and start feeding the world! Let’s compete to see who can donate the most rice! (Track your time, 1-hour playing is one hour of volunteering.)
· Start virtual tutoring sessions via Google Hangouts or other means - many students do not have family members that can tutor them at home and are missing out on the individual instruction they need.
· Are you science oriented? Check out Zooniverse at https://www.zooniverse.org/ it is a website online that allows people to volunteer their time to compiling/analyzing data online for various projects/experiments
· Video Chat with an elderly person or someone feeling lonely.
· Cook a meal and deliver it to the front door of someone’s home. (Take a photo and upload on Google Classroom under Social Distancing Volunteering, make sure to mention why you picked this family and log your time)
· Bake cookies for someone and deliver to their front door! (take a photo and log your time. As you post your photo, indicate why you picked this person or family.)
· Make encouragement cards for someone in need or in isolation (nursing home, those stuck at home, etc). (Take photos and track your time)
· Make thank you cards for health care workers, fire department, police, grocery store workers, etc. (Take photos and track your time.)
· Take your band instrument to an elderly person’s home and play for them on their front porch or lawn. (Have someone video it and post it!)
· Tutor a classmate or friend online
· Give blood after you get your parents permission. Blood banks are dangerously low, see link for more information: (keep track of your time, it is at least one hour!) https://www.vitalant.org/Home.aspx
· Make a monetary donation to a credible organization. NOTE: You can donate as much as you want, but we will only give 1 hour of service no matter the size of the donation. (Take a phot of your receipt and upload)
· Find out what the needs are in your community:
o In Gilbert
o Food donations are needed. http://www.azfoodbanks.org/index.php/foodbank/results/52658571c16f9386e7b8dc0a965c6d30/
· Write a snail mail letter to a relative, family friend that lives far away or someone in need of encouragement. Ask your church leader for a list of homebound members and write a letter to some of them. Take a photo of the complete address and stamped mail. Then mail it!
· Pick up trash in a specific area. Take photos while collecting trash. You could also invite a friend to virtually collect with you in a separate area. (track your time and post your photos!) -This is my favorite and easy to do!
· Volunteer for LibriVox: Read and record books in all languages for free on the internet. (Track your time and post a photo!)
And finally,
· Check out dosomething.org for more great ideas on service you can do from home!

STAY ACTIVE AND HEALTHY CAMPO VERDE! WE MISS YOU ALL!
A Message from Coach Cornell
TIPS FOR WELLNESS...(Especially during these stressful times).......
1). MOVE "every day"! ( be sure to get outside and be active) You will feel so much better!
2). Increase your FRUIT & VEGETABLE intake (vitamins, minerals, anti-oxidants, essentials).
3). CREATE A DAILY ROUTINE (healthy habits, eating schedule, limit snacking, healthy eating).
4). MENTAL HEALTH:
a). Good sleep habits (relaxing before bed): cut off screen time 1 hour before, clean sheets,
comfortable PJ's, cool temperature in room, and most importantly relaxing thoughts.
Don't try to solve problems in your head.... if you think of something, let it move on...it
will still be there for you to solve the next day.
b). Focus on your "CONTROLLABLES" or what you can control....let the other stuff go!
c). Limit screen time (you will be happier, have more energy, and feel better overall).
d). Don't Isolate yourself (communicate with others and reach out for help).
5. REMEMBER, THIS SITUATION IS TEMPORARY... THIS WILL PASS! Smile and be thankful
for all of your MANY blessings.
STRESS INFORMATION:
1. Stress affects EVERYONE!
-Some may cope more effectively and recover more quickly.
-Stress may be short term or occurrences that continue over time.
-3 Types of Stress: 1). ROUTINE STRESS (every day work, school. etc. 2). TRAUMATIC STRESS (accident, disaster, death, injury, etc) 3). SUDDEN CHANGE STRESS: Stress brought on by sudden negative change (job loss, divorce, illness)
2. Not all stress is bad!
-Can motivate people to perform at their best or "rise to the occasion" (high achieving people feel stress).
-Can be "life saving" in times of danger (brain more "wired in").
3. Long term stress can harm health
-Chronic / long term stress can damage the immune system, digestion, sleep, and reproductive issues.
-Headaches, sleeplessness, sadness, anger, irritable behavior.
-If Long term stress occurs heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, and mental disorders can develop.
4. MANAGING STRESS
1. Recognize the signs of stress.
2. GET HELP! Talk to a health care provider.
3. Regular EXERCISE!
4. Relaxing activities (yoga, tai chi, gentle exercises)
5. Set PRIORITIES (what must get done and what can wait).... You don't have to do everything at once!
6. Stay connected to FRIENDS and FAMILY that can provide support and help!
-Coach Cornell

Marching Band
In the Eye of The Storm
The performing arts faculty are gearing up for the next school year for marching band season and all ensembles. We believe these programs are integral to the student experience and actually enhance it because of performances, self-discipline, team building, time management, and ongoing constructive feedback. Our music programs build a close-knit family where individual talents and strengths bloom while stimulating brain development that will benefit students throughout their lives. Interested in learning more? Check out our website at: campoverdeband.com
During this time of social distancing and home-based classrooms, faculty and staff have connected with students, parents, and boosters using social media, teleconference, phone calls, and online classroom engagement. It has been a time of significant change and creative problem solving that has led to innovation, appreciation, and alternative approaches to accomplishing goals. Even in the midst of uncertainty, one thing is for sure: We miss each other and the activities that unify us throughout the school year. It's been said that when people are forced to disengage and isolate themselves, many people find their greatest moments of inspiration and discovery. Think about it. Over the past few weeks, have you taken advantage of the extra time at home by picking up a new hobby or really digging into current hobbies and interests? Amazingly, in the eye of the storm....... calmness, focus, ingenuity, and gratitude can be found. Interested in reading more? Check out the article below:

Orchestra
Due to the COVID-19 outbreak and subsequent state response, all spring AMEA events have been cancelled. As a result, students who made regionals were unable to audition and participate in the AMEA State All-State Festival and Symphonic Strings was unable to participate in the AMEA All-State Concert Festival. However, we commend these students for excelling in their music studies!
Congratulations to our Strolling pianist Kylie Smith (sophomore) on her original composition being chosen to be featured at the Yamaha Junior Original Composition National Concert held in Boston in May. Her composition is titled “Le réverbère”, which translates to “The Street Light”. If you’d like to hear her beautiful composition, you can find it here at this link:

Here are some topics for you and your teen to discuss to make sure they are handling their webex meetings appropriately:
Where is an appropriate place for you to be when you are video conferencing for school? Consider distractions and where other family members are. Broadcasting from the bedroom is a little intimate for a class setting. If they must, help them carve out a space where they can have peace and quiet but that doesn't convey too many personal details.
Do you know how to mute audio and video? When is it appropriate to do those things?
How do you participate during video conferences? Discuss with your teen if they are expected to submit information in the chat feature for each class? Are they expected to speak verbally or are they muted by their teachers in their classes?
Review the GPS Remote Learning Guidelines together.
