What is Team Adventure?
Math: Beth Flamion
Math 7
Pre-Algebra Honors: This course of study is designed to give students a strong foundation of fundamental skills to help them be successful in their high school math classes. Students will progress through a curriculum that is designed to meet Indiana academic standards in both 8th Grade a and 7th Grade Mathematics and begins to explore concepts from Algebra I. By enrolling in this course, a student will be introduced to the rigor and pace of a high school class without having the grade that he or she earns from it impact his or her high school GPA. Upon completion of Pre-Algebra, a student will have a strong understanding of operations with integers and rational numbers, setting up and solving ratios and proportions, as well as solving linear equations and inequalities. After successful completion of Pre-Algebra Honors, a student will be enrolled in the Algebra Honors program as an 8th grader.
Algebra 1 Honors: For those students entering 7th grade who already exhibit a strong foundation of Pre-Algebra skills. Central Middle School offers the opportunity for students to earn high school credit right away by taking Algebra I as 7th graders. This class has all the same structure and requirements of Algebra I Honors class taken by 8th graders but will consist only of 7th graders. Upon successful completion of this course, a student will be enrolled in the Geometry Honors class as an 8th grader.
Math 8
Algebra 1 Honors: This course continues the study of many algebraic concepts introduced in the 7th grade Pre-Algebra course. Students will further their ability to solve equations, graph and then interpret the graph of equations, and apply the mathematics to everyday life and to workplace examples. Topics include real number operations, linear equations and inequalities, relations and functions, graphs of linear equations, quadratic equations, polynomials, and algebraic fractions. Students will receive high school credit for completing the course and the grade that they earn will be applied to their high school
Geometry Honors: In this course, students will apply the skills that they learned in Algebra I class to study shapes and their properties. Topics include applications of symmetry, rigid transformations, angles and measurements, common shapes and their properties, the Pythagorean Theorem, triangle similarity, and congruence theorems, trigonometry, probability models, proofs, flowcharts, properties of polygons and circles, and three-dimensional solids. Students will receive high school credit for completing the course and the grade that they earn will be applied to their high school GPA. Upon successful completion of this course, a student will be enrolled in Algebra II beginning as a freshman
English/Language Arts: Mindy Summers
Language Arts 7 Honors
In Team Adventure language arts class, students read, write and think every day. Since the students come to the team with a strong foundation in language, they spend the year focusing on making their best even better. With high school looming in the near future, Team Adventure recognizes the urgency to polish our skills and to exercise them in order to reach our full potential. As a motivational strategy, Mrs. Summers provides the students many opportunities to showcase their language arts skills for authentic audiences locally, state-wide, and nationally. Many of these opportunities are contests and the CMS Adventure students fare quite well. Language Arts is the class where students are challenged to effectively communicate their learning in many ways to prepare for honors-level high school English. After all, a student who reads fluently, thinks critically, writes meticulously, and communicates effectively will find great success across the curriculum.

Science/Biology: Kate Slabosky
Science 7 Honors
Seventh grade science on Team Adventure is jam-packed! Ms. Slabosky’s class is divided into four 9-week long units that cover all of Indiana’s middle school science standards: geology, chemistry, environmental science, and forces and motion. In addition to science content, students will practice the engineering and design process, experimental design, scientific notation, metric system conversions, and dimensional analysis. Hands-on activities include model building, design challenges, demonstrations, experiments, individual and group projects.
Biology Honors Eighth graders on Team Adventure take biology for high school credit. In this course, Ms. Slabosky’s students study ecology, cell biology, the cell cycle, Mendelian and human genetics, and evolution. We also dig into special topics such as the human impact on the ecosystem, cancer biology, stem cells, and genetic engineering. This course combines hands-on activities, group and individual projects, case studies, and in-depth investigations into high interest topics. By taking biology as an 8th grader, students will have more time in high school to take additional science courses that match their specific interests!
Social Studies: Karla Eudy
Social Studies 7 Honors
Seventh grade students study world cultures of Asia, Africa, Australia, and the Southwest Pacific. Students discover the impact of the physical environment, religion, and technology on these cultures today. In addition, students explore map reading, geography, and climates. In studying these areas, the social studies branches of history, sociology, political science, geography, and anthropology are examined from varying local, national, and international perspectives. Growth in the knowledge of world cultures and critical thinking skills are demonstrated through an appreciation of, respect for, and tolerance of, all forms of cultural differences. Social Studies also includes a study of current events impacting the United States as well as the world.
Social Studies 8 Honors
In Grade 8, students focus upon United States history, beginning with a brief review of early history, including the Revolution and Founding Era, and the principles of the United States and Indiana constitutions, as well as other founding documents and their applications to subsequent periods of national history and to civic and political life. Students then study national development, westward expansion, social reform movements, and the Civil War and Reconstruction. Students examine major themes, issues, events, movements, and figures in United States history through the Reconstruction Period (1877) and explore relationships to modern issues and current events.
