St. Columba's Primary School
NEWSLETTER | TERM 2 | WEEK 5 | 26 MAY 2022
From the Principal
Dear Parents and Carers,
Our term is passing by very quickly and we are already half way through. Students have been working well and teachers have begun writing Term 2 reports which will be released on Wednesday June 29.
Please keep our Year 6 students in your thoughts and prayers as they celebrate the Sacrament of Confirmation this Saturday evening. Many thanks to Mr Popadynec, Mrs O'Brien, Mrs Daniele, Mr Yock and Monsignor O’Loughlin for having them well prepared and ready for the night.
Ms Sadowski and I were in Melbourne last week attending a conference around the Science of Learning/Reading which St Columba’s began implementing in Years 3-6 in 2020. Staff will be updated over the course of the next two terms re information from the conference and it was a great opportunity for St Columba’ to make contact with the Catholic Schools in the Diocese of Canberra/Goulburn and the Tasmanian Catholic system who have mandated the Science of Learning/Reading in all of their schools.
Congratulations to Mrs French, who has won Primary School Teacher of the Year - Non-Government in the Australian Education Awards for 2022. Mrs French is a very committed teacher and has worked very hard at implementing the PreLit Programme and Walker Learning in her Kindy class.
Just a reminder re parking protocols that the Ranger has been active in issuing parking infringements and moving people on who are not following parking protocols on the street verges.
Please note Term 2 will conclude Friday July 1.
God Bless and keep safe.

Principal
Confirmation Mass
We are excited to celebrate the Sacrament of Confirmation with our Year 6 candidates this Saturday 28 May at 6pm in the St Columba’s Church.
Please keep our candidates in your prayers as they complete their final preparations, including a Retreat Day tomorrow.
National Sorry Day – Thursday 26 May
National Sorry Day is a day to acknowledge the strength of Stolen Generations Survivors and reflect on how we can all play a part in the healing process for our people and nation. While this date carries great significance for the Stolen Generations and other Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, it is also commemorated by Australians right around the country.
Thank you to our Year 4W Class for leading our Sorry Day Assembly last week.

To celebrate St Columba’s Feast Day and the launch of the Bishop’s Lifelink Appeal all students will have the opportunity to wear free dress on Wednesday 8 June. A gold coin donation is encouraged to help us fundraise for this worthwhile cause. Further information will be released next week.

Mary - the Month of May
May is traditionally devoted to Mary, our Mother. This Christian custom of dedicating the month of May to the Blessed Virgin arose at the end of the 13th century. The practice of honouring Mary during the month of May has been especially recommended by the Popes.
The Blessed Virgin Mary is the Mother of the Church and therefore the example, as well as the guide and inspiration, of everyone who, in and through the Church, seeks to be the servant of God.
Cricket Carnival
On 25 May at Richardson Reserve Year 6 students attended the St Columba's School Cricket Carnival. The students played five Cricket Blast style games and were placed in mixed teams named the Sixers, Thunder, Heat, Striker and Hurricanes. The winning team were the students in the Sixers team winning all of their games. The Heat team came a close second only falling short on one game. An honourable mention to our Hurricanes team that finished third yet scored the highest number of runs (429). Our overall effort in the competition was exceptional and many, who have never played cricket competitively, rose to the challenge and improved throughout the day. After the 5 matches, selected students played a bonus match based on those who had displayed exceptional cricketing skills throughout the day. The bonus match consisted of an All Star White team vs and All Stars Green team. Both teams played to the best of their ability and the White team overcame the green team 114 to 97. Congratulations the Sixers and the All Stars White team for their achievements.
A special thank you to our superb parent helpers, supporters and WA cricket representatives who attended the event. We certainly could not have had the competition and high level of success without their involvement. We had a few parents who put themselves forward to help with umpiring and scoring and all really enjoyed the experience. We are proud of our students' efforts, displaying their cricketing abilities and being excellent representatives of their school.
Well Done!!!

Healthy Self Esteem
Self-esteem is your opinion of yourself. Everyone lacks self-confidence from time to time, however if your child is experiencing low self-esteem often you may notice they are presenting as unhappy, angry, fearful or frustrated. Self-esteem is important because kids who feel good about themselves have the confidence to try new things, they are more likely to try their hardest, and feel proud of what they can do. Healthy self-esteem helps with resilience in children to cope when they make a mistake or are faced with conflict, and to try again at a task that was difficult for them. Every child is different and healthy self-esteem may come easier to some children than others, however parents are able to support their child’s self-esteem. It is important to talk with children about their feelings and emotions, and that all feelings are valid, there are no good and bad feelings. All feelings are important to allow us to express ourselves and recognise who we are. It is important to focus on strengths by praising children, encouraging children to try new things, and supporting children to help others and give.

P&F News
Hi Everyone,
Wow! What a fantastic result from the sausage sizzle and cake stall run by the fabulous year 1 families on the weekend. A MASSIVE thank you must go to Elsie Blay, Stacey Liyanage and all of our wonderful volunteers for making the event such a huge success. Congratulations to Andrew Wadham who was the winner of the raffle on the day and to Tracie Murray for generously donating the raffle prize.
Our next event will be the Camp Australia Regional Handball Championships which will be held on the 19th of June at St Columba's Primary. Close to 80 finalists from across WA will be competing to take out the title with the P&F and Dads of St Columba's running the sausage sizzle/food stand for the event. We will be calling for volunteers, and would appreciate your support.
The P&F committee have been looking at ways in conjunction with the school that we can empower our children and provide them with learning opportunities in the areas of anti-bullying, resilience, positive social interactions, cyber-security and other important values for life. We are looking at the various options (incursions, workshops, parent resources etc) and will be funding these initiatives throughout the year. If you have any ideas, suggestions or contacts in this space I would love to hear from you. Initially we will be allocating these resources to the upper year groups.
Another initiative the P&F are looking into is in the space of co-curricular activities. In particular the areas of lunchtime and before/after school sport as a starting point.
It is the result of your generosity that the P&F are able to fund such wonderful opportunities for your children.
Lots happening in our space. As always, please speak to your class reps or any of us on the executive if you want to find out more or get involved.
Thanks
Hayley Mitchell
