The Grass Valley WAG
Week at a Glance: 9/2-9/6
Month 1 is done!
I hope you took some time to engage in self care over this long weekend. I spent the time with my baby...and watched him crawl for the first time! So it was definitely a big weekend in our household:)
Congratulations all around for making our way through our first month of school! It was so wonderful to end the week with our first Superhero Circle and our Back to School picnic! We have built such a strong community already this year!
This week we will have our Williams audit - please be sure curriculum materials are stacked on students' desks to assure that the auditor is able to easily review them and not interrupt your teaching. Anyone who needs additional materials will receive them this week!

Instruction & Assessments
Assessments:
#1: Focus on Mastery of Foundations
All Kindergarten students should be assessed until they demonstrate mastery in Foundational Skills. This is a change from previous guidelines, which was to continue Foundations in winter and spring only if students were Below A on the F&P.
We are replacing Early Literacy Behaviors and Rhyming with Segmenting and Blending to support phonemic awareness. (Early Literacy Behaviors and Rhyming will still be available in Illuminate as an option for schools.)
To make sure students are on-track for systematic phonics instruction, we are setting the goal for Kindergarteners to learn 20 letter names by 11/1. Please note: Illuminate allows teachers to retest only missed questions
#2: Additional Emphasis Of Sight Words in K-2
To support oral reading fluency, we are adding more Sight Words to the requirement for Grades K, 1, and 2
#3: Targeted F&P Benchmarking in 3-5
Grades 3-5: For purposes of district benchmarks, the F&P Reading Record is now required only for students who are 1 year or more below grade level as measured by the SRI, and only during the Fall and Winter trimester. Spring is no longer centrally required for students who are at or above grade on the SRI. (Of course, sites who have made decisions to use F&P to progress monitor more frequently should absolutely continue with their plans!).
Ideally, F&P assessments would be administered AFTER the SRI.
SEL Corner
- Be Safe
- Be Respectful
- Be Responsible
We are a PBIS school. All staff are expected to use the Grass Valley Way with students. Be sure that you are communicating in a preventative manner, and not a reactionary one, including using an appropriate tone of voice with all students.
Behavior Flow Chart for Referrals Staff members who send a student to the office should do so based on the normed behaviro flow chart. All students sent to the office should be sent with a URF.
Universal Referral Forms For any student sent to the office, we should receive a URF. This is how we will communicate with families about the incident and track data on students' needs.
Pre-Referral Intervention Guide This guide shares information and examples about each of the pre-intervention techniques listed on the URF.
