Spirit Week 10-3-10-6
Updates
Here it is, October, and we are halfway through the first quarter. During the first part of the school year students have worked hard at learning classroom and school routines. In the classrooms, students are working at building caring communities where they can support one another in their learning. We are also working on restorative practice circles in our classrooms. We would love for you to ask some questions at home about some of the things that we have been focusing on at Taylor Elementary. (classroom and school routines, supporting each other, restorative circles, and our word of the month “helpful”).
Instead of asking… “How was school today?”
Ask this instead… “What was the hardest thing you had to do today?”
Northwest Homecoming Parade:
This is just a reminder that the Northwest Homecoming Parade is this Wednesday 10/4/23. The parade will start at 6:30PM. The shuttle from Northwest to Civic Center will be running from 5:15-6:15.
Cafeteria Update:
After the October break 10/16 - The cafeteria will be starting to sell snacks. If your child would like to purchase a snack, you will have to make sure they have money in their account through PaySchools. The cafeteria will not accept cash, all purchases have to go through Payschool. The students will be able to go through the lunch line and scan their ID which will show if they have money on their account, and if they do have money and want a snack they can purchase the snack and the money will be deducted from the payschool account.

Attendance Up-date:
As part of Attendance Awareness Month, we would like to push out messages to our families about the importance of good attendance. Here is our first up-date:
WHAT CAN PARENTS DO:
• Set a regular bedtime and morning routine.
• Lay out clothes and pack backpacks the night before.
• Keep your child healthy and make sure your child has the required shots.
• Introduce your children to their teachers and classmates before school starts.
• Develop backup plans for getting to school if something comes up. Call on a family member, a neighbor or another parent.
• Try to schedule non-urgent related medical appointments and extended trips when school isn’t in session.
• If your child seems anxious about going to school, talk to teachers, school counselors and other parents for advice on how to make your child feel comfortable and excited about learning.
• If you are concerned that your child may have Covid-19, call your school for advice.
• If your child must stay home due to illness, ask the teacher for resources and ideas to continue learning at home.
Here are our current numbers for Daily Average Attendance for the week of 9/25-9/29:
K: 93.2%
1: 92.4%
2: 94.1%
3: 94.3%
4: 92.7%
5: 89.1%

Thank you for all you do to get your children to school everyday, on-time! It matters!!!

Praise, Encouragement, and Rewards
Hello!
I hope this letter finds you in good health and high spirits.
My name is Aly Emerson, and I am Taylor Elementary’s Registered Behavior Technician (RBT). I have 9 years of experience in education, both in general and special education.
I am also a parent of a 10-year-old boy, and I have often wished that I had a parenting handbook to tell me how to navigate certain issues that arise.
Through my job and parenting experience, I have learned that there are many ways to do things, and that everyone is doing the best job they know how to do. I have also learned that kids, like most adults, prefer to hear about the things they’re doing right, instead of what they’re doing wrong.
Simple verbal praise can go a long way when it comes to building relationships among friends and family. Most of us enjoy a good compliment or reward, and it makes us more inclined to repeat a behavior when someone else takes notice of us doing something right.
Most people associate the word “consequence” with something negative that happens after a choice is made, when in reality, it can be a positive thing.
When my son or a student does something positive, no matter how small, I do my best to verbally praise them. It could be something simple like, “Oh thank you for using your manners! I really appreciate it!” or “It was so responsible of you to clean up your mess without me having to ask. I’m so proud of you!”
If my son does something desired without me asking, I’ll occasionally reward him with something bigger like a snack or candy.
Most kids/people want one-on-one attention from those that they love, so rewarding them by playing a board game or watching their favorite show together can be very motivating for good behavior.
I look forward to working with your kiddos this year, and I’ve posted a link that describes different kinds of praise for children ages 1-18.

Thank you for your time,
Miss Aly
