Shine Bright with Supt. Rebecca A. Jenkins
Dear District 70 Families:
On the cusp of spring break, I want to take a moment to reflect on the journey we've shared this academic year. It's been a period of growth, challenges, and remarkable achievements, all of which have brought us closer as a community.
To our students, your dedication and resilience have been the heartbeat of our schools. You've adapted, learned, and thrived, showing us the true meaning of perseverance. Your energy and enthusiasm inspire us every day, and we are incredibly proud of each one of you.
To our parents and guardians, your support and partnership have been invaluable. Your involvement in our educational journey not only enriches our school environment but also strengthens the bond between home and school. Thank you for being our allies in nurturing the next generation of leaders and thinkers.
To our dedicated staff, your commitment to our students' success is the foundation of our schools. Your hard work, creativity, and passion make a difference in the lives of our students every day. You create spaces where learning flourishes, and for that, we are deeply grateful.
As we look forward to the well-deserved break, I encourage everyone to take this time to rest, recharge, and enjoy the company of family and friends. Let's use this break as an opportunity to rejuvenate our spirits and return with renewed energy and enthusiasm for the final stretch of the academic year.
Shine Bright,
Rebecca

LAST CALL to Have Your Voice Heard via Survey!
Thank you to the parents and guardians who have completed the 5Essentials survey, but we still need your help.
While the survey remains open until March 29, we really need Highland Middle School parents and guardians to complete the survey. We are still short on survey responses from HMS, which means a report on parent/guardian concerns, praises, and potential changes will not be generated for us to use to help guide and improve the school in the future. We need 20 percent of the parent/guardian population, and today we are only at 15 percent. Please help us so that we can hear your voices and make the necessary changes to improve our middle school.
Take the survey now and have your voice count!!
We have reached the necessary percentages at the elementary schools to generate a report for all principals to review with their staff, but you can still take the survey if you'd like to be included!
Fabulous time at the HMS Culver's fundraiser this month!
The new CKLA curriculum has students on Viking Quests! Check out these intelligent, resourceful Adler Park explorers.
Rockland's Career Day brought hometown Rock Star Ike Reilly and his son, Shane, to school to teach about and play music.
IAR Testing Starts April 4!
The Illinois Assessment of Readiness (IAR) is a state assessment and accountability measure for Illinois students enrolled in public school districts. IAR assesses the Illinois Learning Standards incorporating Common Core and will be administered in English language arts and mathematics to all students in third through eighth grades.
Students in third through fifth grades start the IAR assessment on April 4th and will complete testing on April 10th. Adler and Butterfield schools have an additional pilot assessment that will be given on April 11th. These two schools were randomly selected by the state and students must participate in the pilot.
Highland Middle School students will take the IAR starting on April 8th and complete testing on April 10th.
Results from these assessments will be shared with families in the fall.
To help your child during testing you can:
- Avoid unnecessary absences from school when possible;
- Assure your child has a good night's sleep;
- Make sure your child has a healthy breakfast to help them perform at their best;
- Make sure your child comes to school on time;
- Make sure your child's has a fully charged device (Chromebook or iPad);
- Check to make sure your child has working headphones at school;
- Thank you!
Many thanks to the D70 Foundation for Excellence for awarding about $10,000 in mini-grants to staff at all five schools for unique programs they created to enhance education.
The D70 "arteffects Student Art Show" remains on display at Cook Park Library through the month. Here a young Butterfield student stands by her amazing creation.
Goldfish were a hit at the recent Copeland Manor Fun Fair as almost everyone hoisted a plastic bag containing the new family or classroom pet!
Families Learning Together Series
Please join us for our next Families Learning Together event at 7 p.m. on April 24th at Rockland School when Jennifer McAdams from Simply Bee Counseling will present on "Stop the Guilt: Guide for Parents to Lead with Love & Boundaries."
In this presentation, McAdams joins D70 parents to discuss how to support children through emotional validation, compassion, and positive boundaries. Borrowing from Emotion Focused Family Therapy (EFFT), this presentation will empower parents to lean on proven strategies to let go of guilt and foster a caring environment where their child feels emotionally safe and supported.

Be SMART - Firearm Safety at Home
Research shows that secure firearm storage practices are associated with up to an 85% reduction in the risk of self-inflicted and unintentional firearm injuries among children and teens. Storing firearms securely and separately from ammunition protects children in homes and the community. Be SMART helps parents and other adults normalize conversations surrounding gun safety and take responsible actions that can prevent gun deaths and injuries.
Be SMART
SECURE all guns in homes and vehicles;
MODEL responsible behavior around guns;
ASK about the presence of unsecured guns in other homes;
RECOGNIZE the role of guns in suicides;
TELL your peers to be smart.
