We finished our book, The Boy in the Striped Pajamas. Please sign and return the permission slips for the movie if you have not. We will watch the movie May 21st and 22nd. I will not allow students to watch the movie if they didn’t turn their permission slip in yet.
Spelling this week dealt with homographs, which are words that are spelled the same but have different pronunciations. Spelling Tests are 20% of their grade, so they really need to study those words for Friday’s tests. They will have one more spelling unit this year.
We took notes on connotations and denotations. Ask your child to tell you the difference. They completed a Wordsharp Vocab Tutorial on it.
I also introduced our final Grammar Project. They need to create a song about a part of speech that they chose. It can be recorded or they can sing it in front of class. They have rubrics and guidelines to follow. I have heard some interesting song ideas already. These are due June 1st. It’s my favorite project of the year.
With the end of the year coming up quickly, I’ve reminded them that now is the time to really do their best on everything and make sure they are handing their assignments in on time! Our days are numbered here!
Have a wonderful weekend!

This week the sixth graders continued with Module 16 by practicing finding the interquartile range (IQR) and the mean absolute deviation (MAD) of a set of data. Then they finished the week with learning about displaying and analyzing data in dot plots. They also took the final round of MAPS testing for the year. I AM SO PROUD of all the sixth graders and their growth they have shown in Math! They did awesome by taking their time and they really rocked the test!
Next week is a very busy week! The sixth graders will finish up Module 16 by learning how to create histograms. Then they will review and take the Module 16 Quiz and Unit 7 Test. Thursday they will not have classes due to Field Day and Friday is an Inservice Day!
We will finish up the year with learning how to calculate surface area of polyhedrons (3-D figures) by creating a net, then also review solving for the volume.
Mid term progress reports have gone home and all have been brought back signed! Thank you for your continued support at home! As we are nearing the end of the last trimester, the students need to keep a close eye on any missing/absent/late work or corrections to be done before the end of the year.
Have a great weekend!

In 6th grade science we are well into our research and discussions pertaining to your volcanoes. The timing of Hawaii’s Kilauea volcano has provided for some great real-time videos and news articles to use in class. This week Monday, you were emailed the volcano project overview, please remember that the model component of the project is to be done AT HOME and the research will be done in class. The due date is will be WEDNESDAY, MAY 30th!! Have a great weekend!

We completed chapter 6 this week. After an extensive review Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, they took the Chapter 6 Test on Friday. The test and all papers should be graded and into Skyward by the end of the weekend. Look for an emailed progress report during the first part of next week. For the remainder of the year we will look at how this country became united after the war. We will read about the Articles of Confederation and learn how George Washington was not able to retire to Mount Vernon after the war. A much bigger job awaits this leader. I have truly enjoyed teaching social studies to this group of sixth graders. They have great curiosity and are always up for an active discussion. I think they are well prepared for seventh grade social studies with Mr. Johnsen. Thank you for taking the time to read this weekly newsletter. Have a great weekend and a wonderful summer.

Band News
The Sixth Grade Band had a great week of classes! We have been perfecting our new notes and rhythms needed for our Spring Concert music. In band lessons, students worked on songs using a rhythmic pattern known as syncopation.
Please make note of our Spring Concert on Tuesday, May 22 at 9:45 AM and 7:00 PM at Yorkville School. Communication of this date with your child’s sports coaches is greatly appreciated!
Please spread the word about our final Culver’s Band Fundraiser on May 22 from Noon until 10:00 PM.
Have a great weekend!
