Congratulations to our Volunteer of the Year!
The District has voted our own Evan Krecek Volunteer of the Year for the whole District! Every single day, rain or shine, we are graced with the presence of Evan in our library. An alum of DNHS, and a former Teacher Assistant to the library, Evan has continued to come into the library to help us after graduation. We are so grateful for all his hard work. This award recognizes the dedication with which Evan serves the DNHS population. Congratulations, Evan!
Students Fundraise to End Poverty by Selling Study Books!
I am so proud of Kaviya! When she first came to me to ask if I had books to donate to her so she can fundraise, I did not immediately recognize how determined she was to make a difference. Weeding older editions is a normal and necessary part of keeping our collection current. But the books we take out are often still useful. Kaviya collected the books and with her club, sold them at an outdoor College Prep Book Sale.
A message from Kaviya:
"Thank you so much for supporting us, and donating the books on behalf of Akshaya Patra!
We raised $140 which feeds 7 children for an entire year!
This is the website for more info about our organization: https://www.akshayapatra.org/
Once again thank you so much, this book sale wouldn't have happened without your generous donations of the books!"
DNHS STUDENT PUBLISHES A BOOK!
Congratulations to Carswell, who has published his first book, entitled Just Beyond the Edge. According to this budding star, the novel is a horror-romance. Centered around a sixteen year old boy who begins to experience the paranormal, the book's plot twists and turns. The protagonist falls in love, is betrayed, and experiences all the normal ups and downs in life with one exception: through it all, he is haunted. He must figure out what creepy entity is lingering in his periphery. Carswell took inspiration from Stephen King's It. Click the link to order this soon to be bestseller from Amazon. Or, come to the library to check it out!

The Library Celebrates Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month
So much of the history of our country is entwined with the history of many of our DNHS students of Asian and Pacific Islander descent. We honor the rich heritage of our community by making more books available that describe the myriad of experiences encompassed within the AAPI designation. Please stop by to read something from our extensive collection.
Jewish American Heritage Month
The library honors the experience of Jewish Americans. We have always had an noteworthy collection of history and fiction books covering The Holocaust. Ms. Furtado is actively building the collection to include more modern experiences. We hope our students can find characters with whom they can easily relate with our new titles. Special thanks to Jia for these and other beautiful and informative posters.
Autism Awareness Month
May is Autism Awareness Month. We are so lucky to have Best Buddies at Del Norte! Best Buddies is coming to the library to help us build a library display centered on their mission: to create opportunities for one-to-one friendships, integrated employment, leadership development, and inclusive living for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD).
National Pet Month
Help Needed: Humans Need Animal Love!
Come match our staff's pets to their humans in our fun, interactive library display. For the online version, click the link. The first screen is the pet. The second reveals the owner.
Sample: Can you guess which DNHS humans belong to these pets?
Happy Pride Month!
While we close the upstairs library in June for book check-in, we do try to feature strong LGBTQIA options for students to check out throughout the year.
Book Spotlight:
One of my favorite books in our collection is Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller. This historical fiction is written in a beautifully lyrical style. It tells the story of Achilles and Patroclus. Achilles is the famed warrior of the Trojan War. Patroclus is a Prince who is scorned by his father for his 'weakness': his kindness. In this fascinating account of the war story we all know as the Iliad, we get a unique, character driven tale of two men who complement one another in a relationship that grows to something truly epic.
Happy Graduation!
It is always a bittersweet event for us to say good-bye to our students in June. Many of our senior students have worked as Teaching Assistants or have graced the library with their presence throughout their years here. We are so proud of all of their accomplishments!
Seniors: You MUST return all items on your account to walk at graduation! Scour those closets! Collect all library items! Be sure to bring books and Chromebooks in before your early graduation deadline. *Find those Chromebook cords! The I.T. Department charges $30 per lost cord. This is the item that tied up most seniors last year - pardon the pun!
Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs
Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children is a chilling page turner that melds fantasy with historical fiction. Jacob, a Jewish American boy, grew up with his grandfather's stories of escaping persecution in World War 2 by gaining shelter in an orphanage that also housed some fascinating children. These children had eccentric identities. All of them had to race or hide from persecution because of their "strangeness". Jacob thinks these are tall tales - until he is thrust into another dimension, wherein he must fight to save the persecuted. Might these be the very same children? Riddled with baffling photographs that seem circus-like, the entire book casts a spell while examining very real themes.
The Rosie Project by Graeme Simsion
If you are a romance fan, this book is for you. Don Tillman is a brilliant DNA scientist who is neuro-diverse. His brain operates a bit like a database: he can discern with beautiful clarity many numeric elements in life. When it comes time for him to consider choosing a bride, it therefore makes perfect sense that he would find a way to bring order to the quest for his perfect mate. The problem is that love is messy, and dating is riddled with subtext - neither of which are Don's specialty. Enter Rosie Jarman, who, on a quest for her father, requires the help of a DNA specialist. Rosie helps Don with his project. While she does so she comes to worry that the driven scientist may be misunderstood and mistreated by those who should love him most.

Ember in the Ashes by Sabaa Tahir
Sabaa Tahir was the first Pakistani American writer to win the National Book Award for Young People's Literature. She won for All My Rage, though I am writing here about another of her books, which I love. Ember in the Ashes is the first of an explosive series of novels that combine mythology, historical fiction, and fantasy to create an epic adventure. The narrative alternates between the Empire's finest soldier, Elias, who survived an elite but deadly training but has doubts about its worth, and Laia, a member of the caste that has been subjugated by the Empire. She is forced to choose between spying for rebels or letting her brother die in prison. Elias and Laia could forge an alliance, if they can learn to trust one another. Like all great fantasy, the underlying issues echo real life events and empires. You'll love this page turner if you love the mythology of Arabian Nights.
