Unit 3: Elements of Literature
Justine Suba
Why is Literature Important to Learn About?
Literature is important to learn about because it takes us to a different place. Also, it allows us to learn and figure about what a story is really about and what makes it interesting.
How Does Understanding Theme Help us Function Better in Our Own Lives?
Understanding theme in a piece of literature helps us function better in our own lives because we learn from them. For example, a book can be about "defeating the odds". For instance in the book "The Selection" by Kiera Cass, a possible theme could be, you don't have to stick to the status quo. In the book, people are organized in social classes. When it is time for the prince, named Prince Maxon, to find his princess, the kingdom holds a selection(basically the bachelor). There are 35 girls that he can choose from out of all the the social classes. SPOILER- at the end of the third book, he chooses a girl, named America, from one of the lowest classes to be his princess.
How Does Understanding Characters Help us Function Better in Our Own Lives?
Understanding characters help us function better in our own lives because we can relate to them better. For instance, a book can be about a girl being bullied at her school for looking different. Well, say that there is a girl that has faced that obstacle in real life and is reading that book. While reading, she can probably understand how the girl feels in the book because she has been through a situation like that first hand. For example in the autobiography "In Real Life: My Journey to a Pixelated World" by Joey Graceffa, who is a youtuber, writes about how he dealt with divorce, being bullied for being gay, having ADHD, and learning disabilities and how he conquered those obstacles and became the successful person he is today.
