Listening!
Scripture 1 Samuel 3:10
“Speak, for your servant is listening.” These are the words Samuel utters to God. This Scripture is the lectionary text for this Sunday and it is so powerful, I believe it is worth considering, studying, and praying about for days. Samuel was a boy, who was ministering to the Lord under Eli. God was speaking to Samuel, but he didn’t recognize it! Finally, with Eli’s help, Samuel was able to recognize that God was speaking to him, and to give the faithful response. This year, I have challenged this congregation to pray about God’s purpose for our lives. It is going to take work, help from each other, and a willingness to say these words, which seem easy, but are very hard to utter if we are going to live them: Speak, for your servant is listening.

In our lives: On many an evening, my family will find me hiding in my closet! As a matter of fact, we have started calling the closet my “office.” This is because when I am on the phone, speaking with a member of the congregation, or a fellow pastor, or someone who is seeking prayer or guidance, I like to focus wholly on the conversation. In the midst of the usual evening activities of homework, dinner, playing with lightsabers, the cats chasing each other, and other noisy endeavors, I find it very difficult to focus on listening and praying. So, I find a place where I can be quiet and that place is the closet! Particularly in our modern world, we all know what it is like to be inundated by noise, or other demands for our attention. In order to grow as disciples, as people of faith, we must find time and ways to listen for God.
