SLES Family Roar
Week 3/18 -3/22
Congratulations to US!! We won second place in the state competition for Destination Imagination. I am so proud of the Radiating Meteorites, our families, Tuba Baspehlabian, and Ms. Sydnor for their huge victory!! We also won the Best Buddies Bulletin Board Contest AND the Best Buddies Elementary School of the Year!! We will be getting a special plaque and a representative from the Best Buddies organization will visit our school to lead our group in a special tie dye activity!! Congratulations to Ms. Martinez, our students, and our staff who make this amazing opportunity possible!!
AND, even more congratulations are in order!! The following staff members will be honored this year at the annual SECAC (Special Education Citizens Advisory Committee) awards: Mr. Douglas Fraley, Ms. Sandra Peed, Ms. Kelsey Sears, Ms. Alicia Walker, Ms. Anne Webster, and Ms. Mary Ritts. These amazing staff members are so deserving of this honor! They will be celebrated at Huntingtown High School on April 17.
Finally, we celebrated our Teacher of the Year, Justin Wood and our Elementary Support Professional of the Year, Stephen Kapelka. Speaking of Support professionals…April 3 is Support Professional Appreciation Day! Our Instructional Assistants at SLES are truly the heart of our school. We couldn’t do what we do without them! Please feel free to send in a card or treat for one of our Instructional Assistant.
You may also want to post on SLES family Facebook page a picture of the Super Support Professional you want to thank along with a special message to them.
Thank you so much for helping me to honor them!!
On Monday, April 8 there will be an exciting partial solar eclipse. While we will allow students to go outside, we are asking that they not look directly at the sun. The eclipse will begin at approximately 2:00, with maximum coverage at 3:20pm. During the eclipse, there will be 86-88% coverage during which it will get darker outside, but there will not be total darkness.
Parents/guardians and students should be aware of the following safety tips:
- Never look directly at the sun, especially during a solar eclipse. It is dangerous to look directly at the sun and can cause permanent damage to the eyes. Do not look at the sun through sunglasses, telescope, or binoculars.
- Anyone using special viewing glasses or filters should only use those that conform to all International Organization for Standardization (ISO) standards. If you purchase special viewing glasses, ensure they are from reputable manufacturers. There have been reports of counterfeit products labeled as if they conform to international safety standards The American Astronomical Society provides a list of companies whose products are known to conform to ISO standards.
- Resources for elementary students to safely view the eclipse have been shared with schools as they will be at school during max coverage. Students and families are encouraged to read more about solar eclipses and safety and enjoy experiencing this exciting phenomenon.
I hope you all enjoy a spring break that is full of friends, family, and fun!
Respectfully,
Ms. Tammie Rudzinski
A Message from AP Williams
The winter months are difficult as cold and flu season are upon us with the added layer of COVID in the last few years. As parents, you may have questions about when to send your child/ren to school. Of course, we want all students healthy, happy, and ready to learn at school. Here are some helpful hints from the CCPS School Health Services Handbook. Please review the below link to help answer any questions on when to send you child/ren to school.
A Message from the School Nurse
SLES has had a lot of sickness in the last few weeks. Attached are the CCPS Health Guidelines. If your child shows any of the symptoms listed, it will be necessary to pick him/her up from school promptly.
As a reminder, it is the responsibility and obligation of all parents to promptly make arrangements for their child to leave school in cases where a communicable illness may be suspected. This means someone should come for the child within 30 minutes after the school nurse has contacted the family, left a message, or otherwise tried to reach the family.
A message for the Car Rider Crew and Front Office
Front office:
*All early student pick-up's must be before 3:30pm to eliminate the congestion in the front office. We need to maintain a smooth transition into our dismissal time. With your help, this will prevent any disruption and make sure our busses are able to park out front with no issue.
Car Rider Line:
*For the safety of our students, parents, guardians, and staff, please remain in your car during pick up and dismissal. Please remember to drive slowly in and around the car rider area. We have students and staff that we strive to keep safe. Please be courteous and wait your turn for drop off and pick up.
Counselor's Corner
Thank you to all of our volunteers and participants for Career Day 2024. Our students had a great day learning about various careers and hands on experiences. We are excited to do it again next year!
Our character trait this month is patience. To read a story on patience as a family, check out https://tinyurl.com/mr4a6x7x.
HEART Felt (Feeding Empty Little Tummies)
This program is offered through some of our local churches. Your child is eligible to receive a small bag of food for the weekend each and every Friday. The food is provided to our students and families at NO additional cost. Contents will include a small meal/supplemental items and snacks for the weekend. If you have any questions or interested in receiving a bag, please feel free to contact Ms. Bryant at 443-550-9763.
Here at SLES we focus on building character by teaching character traits through the morning ROAR, community circles in the classroom, and teaching social emotional lessons. Students are encouraged to show the monthly character trait each and every day. At the end of the month a student is selected by their classroom teacher along with the help of their classmates.
Ms Bryant our school counselor, then takes their picture and displays it on the bulletin board outside of the main office. Students receive a Character Counts bracelet along with their picture and comments from their teacher. Be sure to check out the current character counts students next time you visit!
