McClure Message Week 9
October 17 - 21
Thank you to everyone who joined us for Carl Hooker's parent presentation: "Parenting in the Digital Age: An interactive discussion around digital wellness, balance, screen time, social media, and more."
If you were not able to attend, but would love more information on helping your child with digital wellness, you can watch a video recording of the presentation and the accompanying slides.
One of my favorite points from Carl's presentation was an analogy. When talking about teaching kids about healthy balance and setting limits, he used the image of a counter full of freshly baked cupcakes. Almost none of us would allow our kids to have as many cupcakes as they wanted every day. Instead, we would probably have a conversation about healthy eating or a balanced diet, or we might set some contingencies such as, after you eat dinner and vegetables then you can have a cupcake. That analogy just made a lot of sense to me - I strive to have those teaching conversations with my own kids and sometimes I just have to set a limit because I know they aren't yet ready to take on that responsibility independently.
Carl also really stressed the importance of individuality for kids. The decision about when to get a phone or when to allow access to social media apps (a slow roll-out of one at a time is how he does this with his own kids) is one that is best based on the signs of responsibility you see in other aspects of their life. This might not be the same age for each child within a family! Once kids have some independence with a device or social media, looking for behavioral changes is a key indicator for when to intervene.

I saw someone post this the other day on Instagram and it made me laugh out loud, probably because it made me think of my Mom and all that money
We want to expose our kids to everything, let them follow their dreams, and often find their people. Dropping “dreams” for lack of interest or skill is a right of passage for most kids, but what happens if you find your kid wanting to quit everything? This article's suggestions are beneficial when trying to build what they call “stick-to-it-ness”.
