Message from the Superintendent
Dear Colleagues -
I want to begin by thanking you for your perseverance, dedication, and energy as we enter into the final weeks of the school year. There are many year-end celebrations, recognition events and graduation ceremonies yet to come, and I know this time will pass in a blur. I appreciate the work and the heart you have put into making this a tremendous year for our students and their families.
I’m excited to share that the district’s administrative team will soon be embarking on a Community Connections listening and learning series of ongoing small group conversations. These small groups will consist of students, staff members and community participants. Through this effort organized by our district’s Communications Department, we hope to deepen our understanding of our students’, staff’s and community’s values and priorities related to our schools. Through our learnings we hope to strengthen our relationships and create meaningful communication within our district. Please watch for more information in the coming weeks from our Communications Department on how you can get involved and provide valuable input.
I also want to share how proud I am of the tremendous amount of generosity happening throughout our district this time of year. Below are just some of examples of the many, many efforts happening in our schools and classrooms.
- Emerson Elementary recently received a generous donation from an anonymous donor, as well as the Snohomish Lions Club, to purchase new school playground equipment. Over spring break, dozens of members of our community helped install and a new slide, five new black metal picnic tables, and fresh playground wood chips. The Snohomish Lions Club also recently presented the district with a second Spot Vision Screener which are essential to school nurses who use them to do student vision screenings.
- This week I was excited to help the Snohomish Education Foundation (SEF) present some of their classroom grants. The SEF was able to fund a record number of 148 grant requests totaling $92,601 this year. This was in part due to the tremendous support received at their annual fundraising auction held last fall. The SEF is passionate about quality education and educational opportunities for all Snohomish School District students, and we are proud to be their partner.
- District students of all ages have been busy organizing fund drives and collecting coins and other donations for the people of Ukraine. Emerson Elementary 4th graders recently organized a school coin drive and delivered $2,200 to the Salvation Army’s refugee relief efforts. And Glacier Peak High School’s ASB leadership held a UNICEF fundraiser on behalf of the children displaced by the conflict in the Ukraine. Passing of the buckets during lunch and online donations raised nearly $850.
In closing, I’d also like to call your attention to this week’s School Board meeting where we held a recognition ceremony for classified staff from our schools and buildings. Next week (May 2-6), we celebrate National Teacher Appreciation Week. Thanks to all of you for the outstanding work being accomplished in classrooms, playgrounds, libraries, school buses, offices, gymnasiums and in every area of our district. Your continued support of student learning and success is greatly appreciated!
Sincerely,
Kent

May Cultural Awareness and Recognitions: Asian Pacific American Heritage, Haitian Heritage Month, Jewish American Heritage Month, Speech and Hearing Awareness Month
In the Snohomish School District and community, we honor and recognize our diversity. Please join with us this May as we acknowledge Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, Haitian Heritage Month, Jewish American Heritage Month, and Speech and Hearing Awareness Month. As a reminder, though these months may be designated as times for specific recognitions, we encourage honor and recognition of our culture and diversity throughout the year.
Asian Pacific American Heritage Month was first nationally recognized in 1992. In June of 1978, a resolution was proposed to proclaim a week including the 7th and 10th of May as Asian/Pacific Heritage Week. The timeframe was selected to honor the first Japanese immigration to the United States on May 7, 1843 and the anniversary of the completion of the transcontinental railroad on May 10, 1869. Most of the railroad tracks were laid by Chinese immigrants. Asian/Pacific encompasses all of the Asian continent and the Pacific islands of Melanesia (New Guinea, New Caledonia, Vanuatu, Fiji and the Solomon Islands), Micronesia (Marianas, Guam, Wake Island, Palau, Marshall Islands, Kiribati, Nauru and the Federated States of Micronesia) and Polynesia (New Zealand, Hawaiian Islands, Rotuma, Midway Islands, Samoa, American Samoa, Tonga, Tuvalu, Cook Islands, French Polynesia and Easter Island).
Haitian Heritage Month is an opportunity for individuals to celebrate the culture and learn the traditions of Haiti and its people. The celebration is an expansion of the Haitian Flag Day on May 18, a major patriotic day celebration in Haiti and the Diaspora created to encourage patriotism.
Jewish American Heritage Month has been celebrated since 2006 after an initial proclamation from President George W. Bush. The announcement was the crowning achievement in an effort by the Jewish Museum of Florida and South Florida Jewish community leaders that resulted in resolutions introduced by Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz of Florida and Sen. Arlen Specter of Pennsylvania urging the president to proclaim a month that would recognize the more than 350-year history of Jewish contributions to American culture.
Speech and Hearing Awareness Month was founded in 1927 by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA). According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the annual event serves to raise awareness about hearing problems and communication disorders. The theme for 2022 is “Connecting People."

Cinderella - Glacier Peak High School
Are you ready for a little magic in your life? Come see the musical Cinderella presented by theatre students at Glacier Peak High School (7401 144th Place SE in Snohomish).
A bona fide fairy tale, told with the Rodgers & Hammerstein hallmarks of grace, originality, charm and elegance. Originally presented on television in 1957, starring Julie Andrews, Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella was the most widely viewed program in the history of television, drawing an astonishing 107 million viewers. Its recreation in 1965, starring Lesley Ann Warren, was no less successful in transporting a new generation to the miraculous kingdom of “Dreams Come True,” and a second remake in 1997 set a new standard for representation and diversity in screen musicals, starring Brandy as Cinderella and Whitney Houston as her Fairy Godmother. This performance is rated PG.
Tickets for this amazing production are on sale now at www.showtix4u.com/event-details/57312. Adults are $15/each and students/senior citizens/military are $10/each. All tickets must be purchased online. Please select the performance date/time and seat at the time of purchase.

Based loosely on the fairy tale, “The Princess and the Pea,” this family-friendly musical has been delighting audiences for over 60 years!

- School Messenger - Our district uses the School Messenger automated system as a tool for communication with our parents, families and staff. School Messenger works with the district’s student-data system (Skyward/Family Access) to notify families and staff through phone and/or email of emergencies, critical school and district messages, school/district closures, inclement weather, attendance issues, underfunded student meal accounts and other events/activities. The overall goal of using this service is for parents and families to receive critical information about Snohomish schools - especially information that affects their children - in a timely manner. As long as we have accurate primary phone numbers and email addresses on record for our students in Skyward/Family Access, families should automatically receive these messages when they are sent out.
