What is geothermal energy?
It is thermal energy stored in earth to heat and cool buildings by using a heat pump system.
Where does it come from?
- It comes from underneath the earth where it is 4,000 miles underneath the earth which is about 5,000 to 11,000 degrees underneath.
- Since it is 4,00 miles underneath the earth, it is were the magma is.
- It can be found Arkansas, Texas, and Dakotas that is found along the Atlantic coast.
How is the energy collected?
- First, the workers drill a hole where there is really hot water to make a well.
- Next they bring the water up to the surface and convert it to energy from a machine.
- The machine converts it to heat and cool buildings.
Can this energy be used in home?
This energy is used to heat and cool buildings and houses.it is an air cooling system that is for houses and buildings.
What are advantages to using this energy?
- Is it clean? It is clean since it is boiling water.
- Inexpensive?
- Green?
- Non-Poluting? It is non-polluting since it is water turned to energy, it is not harmful to the society.
- Easy Available? It is available because it is used as air conditioning so that means anyone can get it.
What are the disadvantages
- Drawbacks? Since the energy comes from the earth, it is dangerous to get it.
- Cost? It is costs about $20,000 to $25,000 to install it.
- Negative impacts on earth? Since chemicals come out of the earth, it could polute the air on earth.
- Easy Available? It is available because it is used as AC so anyone can use it if you are rich because it costs alot
How much does the USA use it?
The U.S. Does not use a lot of Geothermal energy because the percentage is less than 1% so it is 0.41%
How much does the world use it?
The percentage is more than 30% that people use in the world!
Interesting Facts!
- The water where the workers find it is near the mantle since it is 4,000 miles underneath the earth
- It is reliable in areas near tectonic plate boundaries.
- In 2010, 70 countries used geothermal energy to heat their houses.
- We humans have enjoyed geothermal energy as hot springs for thousands of years.
- There are pipes that you can install to your home that is used as heating and cooling for your home.
