Jackson Journal
March Edition
Family Updates and Reminders
- Our daily weather has been fluctuating 20-30 degrees. Make sure your child has a winter coat, gloves, and a hat at school at all times so they are prepared.
- Drop off and pick up times are busy times around Jackson grounds. We all want to make sure students and family members are safe. Continue to drop off/pick up on Menasha at the church. A crossing guard is always present to help students across the street. The circle drive on 17th St. is drop-off ONLY. Keep traffic going one direction. Students should get out of the car on the sidewalk side of the car. Students should NOT be crossing between cars. Manitowoc Police Department will continue to monitor families that are not following drop off/pick-up protocols and administer fines.
- A special THANK YOU and CONGRATULATIONS to our head custodian, Dave Tice, for all his years of commitment and dedication to the buildings of the Manitowoc Public School District. Mr. Tice's last day is March 11th. We will miss him, but know that he will be enjoying his days of retirement.
- Welcome, David Simonar, as our new head custodian. Mr. Simonar will be starting some training the week of March 4th. He starts full time the week of March 13th.
- Jackson raised $7,519.38 for the American Heart Association in the Kids Heart Challenge this year!!! WOW!!
- Jackson staff have shared a concern that many students have been bringing caffeinated drinks to school. Caffeine will affect student learning and make concentration difficult. I ask you PLEASE check your child's lunch to make sure the drink is school appropriate. As a staff, we prefer students just have water in their water bottles. Thank you for understanding!
- Another THANK YOU goes out to our wonderful PTO for organizing and funding No TV/Electronics Week. Our PTO also organized food donation through Amazon for our students grades 3-5 to have a snack during Forward Exams.
Wisconsin Forward Exam
The Wisconsin Forward Exam window is quickly approaching. Students in grades 3-5 will start their testing on April 9-12th. It is extremely important that we have all students at school during testing. Please reach out to your child's classroom teacher if your child is going to be absent.
The following are a few reminders about testing:
- Make sure your child gets a good night of sleep the night before testing.
- Students test better when they eat a healthy breakfast.
- Avoid making appointments or scheduling days off during testing.
- Talk to your child about always trying and doing their best during testing.
Items Needed: Women's & Men's Jogger type pants
We could use both Women's & Men's sizes Small, Medium, Large & X-Large in a variety of colors. If you have any to donate, please drop them off in the office. Thank you!
SFA Chat-With Mr. Sleger
We are quickly approaching the end of the third quarter of school already! This has been an
exciting year for our students as we have shifted to the Success for All (SFA) literacy program! I
know that now our days are getting longer and the weather is getting nicer, homework can tend to
get pushed to the side. The Manitowoc Public School District is continuing our expectation that
students read for 20 minutes Mondays through Thursdays. How can you help? All students have a
new reading baggie including book(s) and a gold sheet for the week called Read and Respond. After your child has read for 20 minutes, either independently or to you, please sign off to verify. One of the biggest areas we work on in our SFA writing is responding in complete sentences. This is a great task to practice at home.
On April 2nd , students will be placed in their new fourth quarter SFA rooms. Placement letters will
be sent home with your child that night. Please be on the lookout for them. Also, ANY students
who are reading below grade level will be invited to attend summer school. Those letters will be
included with the report card.
Thank you for your continued support in your child’s reading success! If you have any questions,
please feel free to contact me.

Message from Nurse Sarah
During the cold weather months, we tend to see an uptick in cases of head lice within our schools, primarily in the elementary setting. The increase this time of year is primarily because kids are spending more time indoors, sharing hats and scarves and having sleepovers with friends. Most cases of head lice are NOT spread in the school setting and can be traced back to an activity or setting outside of school. It is important to know that head lice is transmitted by head to head contact as they do not jump or fly. We recommend that parents check their child's head regularly, especially if they are frequently itching or scratching.
The MPSD has a policy in place that does not allow live lice in the school setting. Students must be treated at home before returning to school. Below you will find a link to some helpful tips regarding head lice. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to your child's school nurse.
Monthly SRP Drill Practice
School safety is critical to high quality learning and the Manitowoc Public School District utilizes the K12 Standard Response Protocol (SRP/SRM) to provide a consistent safety response at all schools. The SRP provides five safety response protocols. Those five responses are SECURE - LOCKDOWN - EVACUATE - SHELTER - HOLD. The SRP provides for a standard response that is shared and trained with students, staff, visitors and with our first responders from the Fire and Police Departments.
Each month throughout the school year, all Manitowoc Public Schools will train on one of the five responses. The training is designed to create knowledge, answer questions, and build familiarity for all students, staff and visitors. This month, March, we will conduct an unannounced LOCKDOWN on our campus. A LOCKDOWN is utilized when there is a threat or hazard inside of the school building.
It will be clear to all students, staff and visitors that this is a training/practice of a LOCKDOWN. During practice our staff will have the opportunity to talk with students about the why, how and answer questions from students. We will walk through the steps of a LOCKDOWN from beginning to end to grow our knowledge and deepen our understanding so we are ready should we ever need to utilize this safety measure.
Please take time each month to ask your child what safety response protocol they practiced and see if they have questions or ideas about how these safety steps work and how they could be used in other places beyond school. The SRP can be utilized in many places for more information please see iloveuguys.org.
