- Raven Homeschool
From the Director's Desk:
We all know goal setting is important, but many of us don’t take the time to put them down on paper and strategically plan them out. Did you know that the simple act of writing down your goals makes it more likely you will achieve them?
Our Raven staff members have been spending time in the past couple of months drafting their SMART goals, reflecting, and amending goals as they are achieved. Without this intentional focus it’s very difficult to continually improve upon our skillsets.
In this short article I’ll be discussing how to set SMART goals to better help your students succeed. SMART stands for specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and timely. A goal is an outcome, something that will make a difference as a result of achieving it. It can’t be too ambitious to be out of reach, but also not so simple that it does not challenge. A goal should be realistic with a stretch, requiring effort and focus to achieve it. That’s why goals need timeframes and measurable action steps along the way so that students can keep track of progress and adjust as necessary.
While research shows that just writing down your goals can help you achieve them, there is more to do than just writing a list. For students to be able to take pride in their effort and accomplishments, they must be taught how to set goals they can attain and that reaching goals requires action.
Specific
Students need to clarify the who, what, when, and where of their goal. Have a discussion about using words that are specific vs. those that are ambiguous, or subject to interpretation.
Measurable
Students need to be able to know when they have reached their goal or if they are making progress toward it. Have a discussion about quantitative vs. qualitative measurement.
Attainable/Actionable
Students need to be realistic about what they can achieve this school year with the time and resources they have available. While "going to college" is a worthy goal, this is far into the future for most students. Work with students to help them understand that goals must also be things students can act on now.
Relevant
Students should be able to explain the personal and academic benefits. Talk with them about qualities that make a goal worthwhile.
Timely
Students need to be able to achieve the goal by the end of the school year. As students are writing have them share their goals with a single peer to help them see if a single school year is a deadline that makes sense for this goal.
New/Returning Staff: Heidi Wright
I’m incredibly excited to welcome Heidi Wright back to our Fairbanks Raven office! Heidi is helping us out with returning to our team in a part-time capacity. Here is an awesome letter submitted by Heidi to our Raven family.
Dear Raven families,
Hello, I am happy to be back with Raven on a part-time basis. For families that are new to Raven I retired in 2018. I had the opportunity to work with the program again in a part-time capacity and was excited to give it a try.
I have been in education since 1984, starting off as a teacher aide and then obtaining a UAF degree in Elementary education in 1992. I was lucky enough to be able to work back in my home village of Manley Hot Springs and eventually became the principal teacher of the Gladys Dart School. Working in a K-12, two or three-room school, demanded a variety of skills and focuses requiring me to continually learn and grow as a teacher during my entire career. That includes getting my special education degree when I transitioned from the Gladys Dart brick and mortar school to Raven Homeschool.
Some of the areas that I enjoyed and gave extra energy towards were Mathematics, Language Art including foreign languages (Koyukon Athabaskan, Norwegian, Spanish). In my tenure at the Gladys Dart School we believed in applied learning and took every opportunity to give students a chance to test out their knowledge based with everyday practical endeavors. We also emphasized education in the arts and music as well as spearheading projects using new technologies such as the MapTeach program through UAF where students built their own maps and adapted their own life stories to their map project.
I truly am excited to return to my work with the Raven Homeschool families and be able to give support where needed to promote all of our students’ education.
Thank you for all the lovely welcomes I have received in my return.
Enaa’ Baasee’
(Thank you very much),
Heidi Wright

Taking the PSAT as a Homeschooler:
Firstly, what is the PSAT?
Is It Important? The PSAT/NMSQT, or PSAT, is a practice test for the SAT that's offered every fall for 10th and 11th graders. It also serves as a qualifying test for the National Merit Scholarship Program, which awards $2,500 scholarships annually to high-scoring 11th graders.
Every autumn, sophomores and juniors have the opportunity to take the PSAT. But how exactly does the PSAT registration process work? Does everyone have the same PSAT sign up date? What does it cost to take the PSAT?
How to Register for the PSAT If You’re Homeschooled
If you’re homeschooled, you can still register for the PSAT—you just need to find a school that administers it. Here are the steps to follow:
Step 1: Get in Touch With a Local High School
Use the College Board’s high school search tool to look for schools offering the PSAT or to confirm that the high school you want to test at will be administering the PSAT.
The College Board recommends reaching out to schools four months before the test to ensure you'll have ample time to work out registration logistics and solidify your test-taking plans.
Step 2: Request a Copy of the Official Student Guide
This free guide will tell you everything you need to know about the PSAT and even comes with a full-length practice test. You can also download the PSAT guide from the College Board website.
Step 3: Determine Whether You Qualify for a Fee Waiver
Generally, those who qualify for PSAT fee waivers are low-income 11th graders.
We suggest reviewing the eligibility requirements and then consulting a counselor at your selected school to determine whether you're eligible. Note that homeschooled students may not request fee waivers directly from the College Board you need to get those through your Raven Counselor.
NCAA & Raven Homeschool:
Raven Homeschool has been cleared by the NCAA and is an approved school for college bound competitive athletes. That means that NCAA accepts the Raven Diploma. We are one of very few "homeschool umbrella programs" that are approved diploma awarding programs.
What does this mean?
This means that if you are a college bound athlete that is seeking admission to an NCAA Division I or II or school with the purpose of competing for athletic scholarships Raven's diploma is accepted.
What's next?
Acellus is our curriculum that is certified and accepted as Core Courses that meet all NCAA requirements. Currently, there are several online curriculums that can be utilized that are already NCAA approved, such as North Dakota Independent Study. For unapproved curriculums, there are Home School Core Course approval forms that need to be completed. We will work with you to complete these forms.
Contact and Questions:
If you are a student athlete thinking about qualifying under NCAA, please contact Ryan Tilbury at 907-374-9432 or rtilbury@yksd.com. Our goal is to have a defined path to success for each of our college bound athletes. Updates to approved curriculums will be announced in our SMORES.

September Recap:
We are starting the 19-20 school year off with a bang! Our office has been a constant bustling of meetings, workshops, and activities. Terri’s quilting club is still meeting weekly and each student is working hard on their quilt. At the end of the year, each student will have a handcrafted quilt to share during a quilt show. Terri has also been busy teaching FLL, Jr. FLL, Book Club, STEAM and Girls Who Code workshops! Students on our FLL team got the opportunity to go to Hope Center and help feed homeless women a meal. Danae is working on building Battle of the Books teams to compete with our other offices in January. She also hosted the Art with Rocky workshops where students used watercolor and finger paints to create salmon prints. Carmen has been enjoying teaching Spanish to students in her Elementary Spanish workshops! Her Spelling Bee and Geography Bee workshops have also started and are going well. Our Family Liaison, Jamie, led a rainy but fascinating field trip to the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center outside of Portage. Students who attended the field trip learned about the center and their animals, received a guided tour and also learned all about Snickers the porcupine in a demonstration. Deb Fancher is back in our office teaching hands-on science workshops. The September workshop was all about strange materials, their properties and what they do us. Tasha Boin Photography also visited the office and did school portraits for our families.

September in Review:
September was a very full month with a lot of fun activities and clubs getting started. Many families came in for School Photos, and it was great to see all the students looking so nice for their pictures. The Yearbook Committee created the first video advertisement for the year to promote pre-ordering early and submitting artwork for the Cover Design Contest. Our JrFLL and FLL teams began to meet weekly to work on the challenge for this year, and Officer Cryderman started teaching D.A.R.E. classes for 5th-6th graders. Despite the pouring rain, we had a fantastic turnout for our Fall Picnic at Sandy Beach and we all stayed cozy in the shelter while we enjoyed food and fellowship together. We had two PAC meetings this month, one during lunch where we enjoyed a meal together while planning Oct activities, and one Raven-wide where we got to collaborate with all the other offices to share info and ideas with each other. Art teacher Rocky led some fantastic art workshops for our students by videoconference and the kids produced some wonderful looking salmon watercolor artwork. We finished off the month with a full-day excursion to the Tracy Arm Fjord for families to enjoy whale watching and seeing the Sawyer glacier. This month had many opportunities for new and returning families to connect with each other and with Raven staff as we dive into the school year together.

Wasilla Office:
September in the Rearview Mirror:
As Autumn leaves fall and the season changes, Raven flies into the end of the first quarter of this school year. September at the Wasilla office was super charged with activities and events! We enjoy seeing so many students - regulars and new faces - in the office for workshops, classes, and clubs. Lego club, Quilter's club, Games club, Bowling club, and 4-H club all got started in September. These popular clubs are still open, so check the schedule for October, and feel free to join! Raven students had two Crafternoon craft days in August. First, Teacher Joy facilitated rock painting - where students chose a bug or butterfly as a model and painted their rocks to match. Later in the month, Mrs. Keller led a fall craft, in which students decorated glass mason jars in an autumn theme, with mod podge and tissue paper. Each student received a battery-powered candle to place in the jar to complete the cozy look. Math Mondays began in September. Raven offers free math classes for students in grades K through 3rd, which focus on basic math fluency, engaging students with math games and group activities. Our local vendor Mrs. Horning offers a math class on Mondays for 4th through 10th grade students, focusing on improving math skills and mastering math concepts related to each student's individual ILP courses. Mr. Bergey's Spectacular Science Workshops were a huge hit this month! Students explored the following science topics: Plastics & Foams, Physics of Toys, Extracting Heavy Metals, All About Oils, Chemistry of Colors, and Frog Dissection. Watch for more Spectacular Science Workshops coming soon! Culinary Cook-Off this month was a success - we had twelve participants bring in pasta dishes, and our local Army National Guard guys came out to judge the competition. September Art with Rocky explored the subject of salmon, and students had fun creating their own salmon watercolors.
