Mr. Mauck's Musings
Tonight is one of the best nights in the winter, Homecoming. The JV will begin at 6 and the homecoming festivities will be before the varsity game. Student Council did a fantastic job of promoting homecoming week. We had hall decorating, daily themes, and homeroom contests, all culminating in tonight's King and Queen crowning.
Good luck to our Swimming and Diving team as they travel Saturday to the Deaconess Aquatic Center in Evansville for the SIAC conference meet. The teams put several swimmers in the finals from Thursday's prelims. The Wrestling team will also be competing for a SIAC title on Saturday at Castle High School. Good luck to the grapplers in their pursuit of a conference title. If you are not traveling to one of these events on Saturday basketball has a rare doubleheader with the girls facing Martinsville at 1 and the boys taking on Evansville Harrison at 6. Good luck to all the Cats this weekend. While we are on the sports theme Keyan and Karleigh LeMond both won individual bowling titles. Nice job on the victories.
The Dubois County Chapter of The Daughters of the American Revolution announced that senior Riley Fischer won their contest and will be moving on to the state competition from Dubois County. Great job by a fantastic young lady. National Honor Society induction of new members will be Tuesday, January 24th in the JHS auditorium. Congratulations to our newest members. NHS members must have a GPA of 4.0 or higher and a commitment to the service of their communities.
A huge thank you to Seibert's Clothing who donated 29 Prom dresses for this prom season. If you are in need of a dress please see Mrs. Keusch or Dr. Nalley to check out what is available. The Jasper Arts Center invited our musically inclined students to see Invoke a string quartet that performed and then held breakout sessions with the students. It was a great opportunity to meet the artists and ask questions.
Mr.Elrod has shared information with the Seniors about submitting senior pictures for the yearbook. The process is easy but has a few requirements to follow. Please see his instructions below.
If you ever wondered how as a senior parent you could help Jasper High School, you could fill out the FAFSA by April 15th. I have included some information from the Indiana Department of Education about the importance of filling out the FAFSA and the state goal of 60%. Dr. Nalley will be sending out letters to the families that have excessive absences. Students are allowed 10 call-in absences per year. After the 10th absence documentation will be required. If a family has advanced knowledge of an absence students should complete a prearranged absence form. There are separate stipulations for unexcused absences and those may carry disciplinary action. Communication with the school is paramount in these situations.
The community has several notices I was asked to share. SWICACC will be hosting a fundraiser on February 18th. The Dubois County Health Department has late-night hours for vaccinations. Movies on Main is still hosting movie nights in the Astra Theater. The Ireland Community is looking for pageant participants. GJCS is showing Screenager at the Astra on February 8th. This is a great documentary for students and parents about growing up in the age of cell phones.
Have a wonderful weekend.

Senior Portraits for Yearbook
- We will gladly use your senior’s school portrait if you feel it is acceptable.
- If you haven't scheduled photos yet, it might be too late to get photos from our local professionals, but there are several amateur photographers we can send you that would be glad to take nice senior photos for a very reasonable price or possibly free. Even some of our talented yearbook staff members might be able to help.
- Please, talk to me before trying to turn in photos from a phone or someone that just "has a nice camera".
Now for the details: (These are the same details sent to students in October)
Your senior needs to choose up to 2 photos.
Have your student talk to their photographer, they (most likely) were already sent a link to a submission website. DO NOT JUST SEND ME PHOTOS! If your child’s photographer is from out of town, and/or did not get the private submission link in their email, please let me know so I can contact them directly.
-The first will be a vertical portrait used in the yearbook and media outlets such as The Herald.
It needs to be a professional-looking photo that is appropriate for school and public viewing. NO cars, trucks, pets, or other "props" should be used in this photo.
-The second will be a horizontal photo that is used on the big screen for our graduation ceremony. This photo can show a little more "personality" and is totally optional.
Both should be free of watermarks and a large enough resolution for print, which is a big reason why your senior’s photographer will be submitting for them. Screenshots from a phone or photos saved from a photographer's website without permission ARE NOT AN OPTION.
-The absolute deadline is February 14th. But we'd LOVE to see them turned in before that! (see what we did there?) So have your senior talk to their photographer soon about their choices.
If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Mr. Elrod!
FAFSA Goal
The Indiana Commission for Higher Education announced a statewide Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) completion goal for high school seniors to improve currently low FAFSA filing rates and increase access to state, federal and institutional financial aid.
The Commission’s goal is to have at least 60 percent of the high school graduating class of 2023 complete the FAFSA by the state’s April 15, 2023 priority deadline. A new statewide goal of 65 percent of FAFSA completions will be set for the high school graduating class of 2024.
Filing the FAFSA is the first step toward accessing some of the $390 million in state financial aid and billions of dollars in federal aid available to learners. According to the National College Attainment Network (NCAN), Indiana high school graduates left $65 million in Pell Grants on the table in 2021 by not completing the FAFSA. Completing the FAFSA on time is a necessary step for 21st Century Scholars to earn the full scholarship amount of up to four years of college tuition.
