MS INCORPORATES SOCIAL-LEARNING PROGRAM
Adjusting to middle school can be difficult for some students. For others, they just need some assistance in organizational skills, adjusting to new friends, and making good choices.
Parke Heritage Middle School has implemented the Second Step program to their rotational classes for this school year. The goal of adding this class is to assist students with Social-Emotional Learning (SEL).
“We want your child to be successful in school, and that means going beyond the basics. Excelling in academic classes is important, but students also need to know how to learn, make good decisions, handle strong emotions, and get along with others,” said Mr. Scott Schulz, Parke Heritage Middle School principal.
Social-Emotional Learning can help students understand, manage and express their emotions, gain confidence, set positive goals and make responsible decisions. Improving and understanding these areas can help to make them better students as well as preparing them for their future.
The Second Step class is a web-based curriculum that provides lessons, videos and activities for the teachers to provide guidance to students. The program has five core Competencies, which include Self-awareness, Self-management, Social awareness, Relationship skills and Responsible decision-making.
“The Second Step class is helping me hold my temper and rage. So when I get mad at people I don’t rage or go mad,” said sixth grade student, Henry Busenbark. “I have been able to get along more with my brother and my littlest sister. The oldest sister is still making me mad a little so I still got some work to do.”
In addition to guided lessons, there are hands-on activities for the students to complete that correspond with their daily topic. Some of these include the “Friendship Knot,” “Maze of Doom,” “Friendship Towers,” and more. These activities focus on incorporating teamwork, friendship and being successful in their tasks.
“My favorite second step activity was the discussion with your parent. I liked it because it gave me a way to talk to my mom about being independent,” said eighth grader Lily Roosevelt.
The activities and lessons vary within each grade level.
“My favorite activity is the human knot because it was fun to just be silly for once,” said Alysha Cox, sixth grade student.
This curriculum also builds on the Turkey Run Elementary Leader in Me and the Rockville Elementary character traits programs. The middle school program is also reinforced by guidance counselor Ms. Kerry Ferguson who presents lessons to the students during their advisory time.
The bottom line is that Social-Emotional Learning improves academic outcomes, graduation rates, test scores, and overall quality of life.
The funding for this educational curriculum was provided by the Title IV grant.

Elementary Themes
Rockville's theme is "All Missions Are Possible." Keeping in mind the landing on the moon, students are encouraged to accomplish their missions and to shoot for the moon! Each month different character traits are emphasized as the students work through their daily missions.
At Turkey Run Elementary, Welcome to Leaderville! Students were welcomed to the new school year with the TRES town of Leaderville. Each classroom area chose a different part of a town to decorate their classroom door and walls. This theme correlates with the school-wide Leader in Me program.

RES FIFTH GRADERS RECEIVE FREE BOOKS
Students in Mrs. Lisa Wrightsman's fifth grade class at Rockville Elementary will enjoy the pleasure of receiving a free book each month throughout the school year.
"I posted a request for some help on Facebook, and within a few hours, 27+ of my friends donated $10 for this project," said Mrs. Wrightsman. "Most of these people are retired school teachers, local business owners and people that are always willing to help in any way!"
The students receive a book every month from August to May. Mrs. Wrightsman has ordered many choices for them to choose from in her classroom.
"Tim Skinner, a retired educator in Vigo County, saw the post and made a HUGE donation- each student in my class will be able to pick out their own $5 book for Christmas," said Mrs. Wrightsman.
A big thank you to these sponsors for adding to the personal libraries of these students.
