Mrs. Greene's 3rd Grade
September 13, 2019
3rd Grade = Amazing!
I can honestly say that I had one of the best weeks I've ever had as a classroom teacher. The students were motivated to learn and give their best. It only takes a little encouragement and a quick pep talk about the value of learning and...BOOM - your kids are ALL IN! They work so hard each day.
I will place the Scholastic Book order tomorrow morning. I am amazed at the number of books this class ordered. It will be so fun to see the kids come into class and see the books on their desk!
If your child is participating in the READING CHALLENGE, the first form is due Monday, September 16. We don't accept late forms. Reading for Week 2 begins the evening of Monday, September 16. See the picture below of the tree that holds the names of all 3rd Grade participants. It's exciting!
Finally, if you haven't joined the PTO, it's not too late. Click HERE to join today!
That's all I have for now...
Enjoy your long weekend!

Room 9 Celebrations
A few student highlights from our week:
- Brock is such a music guy. I mean, he loves some of the "oldies!" We listen to music during cursive handwriting practice and Brock always has a music request for me. Some of his favorites... Prince, Michael Jackson, Billy Joel, and has even requested the song, Footloose! Hopefully he will request Barry Manilow one day!
- Sophie showed me a song/poem that she created with her babysitter to help her study for her Social Studies test last week. It was perfect!
- Melina and I discussed a reading goal that will really help her with stamina. I witnessed her practicing to meet her goal several times this week.
- Gabe walked into Room 9 after Specials and uttered these words...CLASSROOM, SWEET, CLASSROOM!!! Ya know..kinda like - Home Sweet Home! It was precious and made me feel like he enjoys our little home at Smoky Row!
- Lucy is so caring and desires peace and harmony in Room 9. Whenever she feels like there is conflict, she brings it to my attention and wants to hash out a plan. I love this about her!
Max loves to write!

September Birthdays!
Next Week...
- I showed the students the VOICE MEMO app on iphone/ipads. I showed them how they can use the tool to help them improve their fluency, accuracy, and expression. I told them that if they use the tool at home, they are free to text me their voice memo so I can hear their hard work. Feel free to share my number with them: 317-513-1565
- We will dig into our NWEA Data next week.
- We will create a digital data file to store our personal reading and math data. This will help us see our growth throughout the year. We will use Google Sheets!
- When I hold reading conferences with individual students, I type my notes into Google Keep. Since the students have a Google Keep account through school, I will show them how to see the notes I take about their reading. They can even share my notes with you!
Math: Unit 1 - Math Tools, Time, & Multiplication
We will finish Unit 1 on Monday, September 16. I will have a review session on Tuesday and we will take the Unit 1 Test Wednesday and Thursday (September 18-19). We are required to allow two days for students to take a unit test. The test consists of a test of current skills, past skills, and a problem solving/challenge. To make our testing day a celebration, I allow the students to bring in a drink of their choice to enjoy during the test.
Don't forget... students are working on mastering addition facts using xtramath.org. They can work on them at home and during parts of math workshop.
Writing:
We will begin a unit on HOW TO WRITE A PERSONAL NARRATIVE. Students will take a "small moment" in his/her life and create a published story. Next week we will focus on the following skills:
- Writing an effective LEAD
- Adding PARAGRAPHS in our lengthy pieces of writing.
Social Studies: Unit 2 Finding Places in the United States
Word Study:
This week: We learned about OPEN and CLOSED syllables and how that can help improve our spelling. We also learned the meanings of the prefixes il- im- in-. Look for a short assessment to come home next week. Next week we will learn about R-Controlled Syllables. I can see a difference in your child's spelling already!
