Macleans Primary School Newsletter
Wednesday 5 April
Macleans Primary School Community
Hi Everyone
I do hope everyone found the learning conferences beneficial and that you got a good understanding of how your child was settling into the year, both with their learning and social aspects. Please remember that you can contact your child's teacher to follow-up with any questions or for further clarification.
The Year 4, Year 5 and Year 6 EOTC programmes were a success. I visited the Year 6 camp and was impressed by the children and how they were giving everything a go - the Macleans Values were definitely on show! I enjoyed my time at the Year 5 overnight experience as I 'got amongst it' with the children. I did not get a chance to visit the Year 4 camp but heard the activities and EOTC experiences challenged the children very well. Thanks to all the parents who helped out! We could not do nearly as much without the generous gift of time that you give. The teacher's dedication and focus on the children's needs during the camps was superb, ensuring all children were supported. Wow! What a team effort from everyone to ensure a great EOTC week as Macleans Primary certainly lived the Mahi Tahi: Together The Best we Can Be.
The home-school partnership was also strong at the Y1-Y3 parent session on literacy & numeracy ie. what does literacy and numeracy look like for my child at Y1-Y3. The staffroom was full as the Y1-Y3 leadership team presented on all things Y1-Y3 numeracy and literacy.
As we wrap up term 1 and look to term 2, we share the successes and highlights. We also reflect on what we could do differently and change for a better outcome. Term 2 will bring many terrific learning and extra-curricular activities for the children; Macleans Primary looks forward to sharing Term 2 with you soon, so roll on Wednesday 26 April!
Please enjoy this longer than usual newsletter jam-packed with all things Macleans Primary. A reminder that this newsletter can be translated into a different language. Look for the 'translate' box in the top left hand-corner of the email/newsletter.
Happy Easter everyone and I wish you a warm, relaxing, enjoyable and fun break with family and friends.
Regards & Nga Mihi

New Fire Alarm
We needed to upgrade the school's fire alarm system, as it was not up to code. It is certainly up to code now as evident in the 'false alarm' that was activated last Wednesday. Although the false alarm was a distraction to us all, it was great to see how well all the classes and children managed the fire alarm procedures. Thanks to the school neighbours and parents who heard the alarm 3 streets away!
Macleans Primary Cricket Team: Champions of Howick-Pakuranga
For the past couple of weeks, MPS played in the semi-finals and finals of the Local Schools Cricket Competition. Owairoa and Macleans Primary won the semi-finals. In the final Macleans Primary defeated Owairoa, meaning Macleans Primary are the champions of Howick-Pakuranga. Congratulations to David Harper and the Macleans team. A great result for David who has been involved in sports coaching at Macleans Primary for seven and half years and is retiring at the end of the term. Thanks to all the teachers and parents who have coached and managed the teams this term. Your organisation made for the smooth running of five days of cricket. Also thanks to Francis Scordino from the Howick/Pakuranga Cricket Club for all his organisation and assistance in ground bookings and making the toilets available to us. We are looking to build on successes this year, so please let me know if you have any suggestion that may help improve the cricket next year: m.cooke@macleansprimary.schoioil.nz or d.harper@macleansprimary.school.n

Enviro Group Updates, inc. Moth Pods
The Enviro team has gotten off to a great start this year! We collected compost from our compost bins and worm farms and dug it into our gardens to replenish the soil. The Year 1-3 gardening club which meets on a Tuesday after lunch eating has helped to plant flowers outside Room 8 in our Pollinator garden. This amazing group of helpers added worm tea concentrate to their watering cans and watered the flowers and veggies to encourage growth in our plants. The Evergreen Enviro team which meets on a Wednesday after lunch eating, has planted veggies, weeded around the native trees we planted last year and had their first collection of moth pods and small vines - which were found on school grounds! We are excited to continue collecting moth pods from our local Community, if you have any growing at your home please let Mrs van Wijk know s.vanwijk@macleansprimary.school.nz and she will organise a time for the Evergreen Enviro Team to collect these noxious, invasive weeds. Most recently, the Enviro Team went to 3 houses - 2 on Cherry Rd and 1 on the Parade (near Cherry Rd), that have moth pods located on their properties - and removed HEAPS of moth pads. Great community and environmental service team!
Go the moth pod crew!
Who knew you could use moth pods as letters?
Macleans Primary School is victorious over the moth pod invaders!
Travelwise Team Update
On Wednesday. 8th March, Mrs van Wijk and 5 lucky Travelwise leaders attended the Auckland Transport - Travelwise workshop. We learnt about all the ways we can encourage parents and students to make wise choices as they travel to and from school. We practiced recording the speed of vehicles traveling on the road and we were encouraged to think about different ways we could encourage students to walk/scoot or bike to school to reduce traffic around the schools drop off zone. It was a fantastic day and we are really looking forward to meeting with Claudine our Travelwise coordinator to plan our Travelwise events for the year.

How many different countries can you see in these 'UN' inspired R12 creations? Well done R12...I'm use some of you could definitely be ambassadors for the UN in future:). For more about the United Nations click HERE.
R16 Zentangle Art
What is Zentangle art you ask? The Zentangle Method is an easy-to-learn, relaxing, and fun way to create beautiful images by drawing structured patterns. We call these patterns, tangles. You create tangles with combinations of dots, lines, simple curves, S-curves and orbs. These simple shapes are the "Elemental Strokes" in all Zentangle art.

Rotary Fun Run Sunday 26 March for Y4 to Y6 Children: Stockade Hill
Thanks from Howick Rotary (and well done Macleans primary - 17 runners!!!)
A huge thank you to you all for your participation in this year's Fun Run. What a great turnout on Stockade Hill with students and families gathered. There was a real community spirit evident as families and friends enjoyed the morning. It is so good to see so many schools actively engaging with the community and for such a worthy organisation, Howick Coastguard. I don't have any final figures for you but I can share with you that the schools' contribution was in excess of $1,000.00. Very much appreciated. Again our sincere thanks for your continued support of this event and we look forward to you joining us again next year.
