The J-Hawk Experience
Info you need to know for week of October 16-20!
Message from the principal
This week, The UHS National Honor Society and Student Senate have joined forces to coordinate Combat Hunger Week, raising awareness about hunger in Iowa as well as raising funds and food to donate to the Food Bank of Iowa. The radio station STAR 102.5 and Ankeny High School will also be getting in on the week as we culminate the efforts with a Combat Hunger Rivalry Week football game Friday night at 7:00pm as our J-Hawk football team hosts the AHS Hawks for the district title at UHS on Frerichs Field.
Each morning this week, one student from UHS and one from AHS will be interviewed by Ken and Colleen on STAR 102.5 and broadcast out on their morning radio show to give updates on their food and fundraising events during the week.
Ken and STAR 102.5 will also be at the game on Friday night broadcasting live about the Combat Huger event! At the game, we will be taking donations from the public of money or any canned/nonperishable food.
The UHS Student Senate and NHS will have activities going on throughout the week to help encourage students and the entire UHS community to raise money for this important cause. Our goal for the week is $1500. Here are some of the activities they would like everyone to know that will be going on:
Pie In the Face - Monday through Friday there will be buckets in the lunchroom if you would like to donate money towards one of your fellow teachers to get a pie in the face at the next assembly.
Hat Day - Tuesday, Oct 17th. Students and teachers can pay $1 to wear a hat for the day. They will be getting a stamp on their hand at the door when they pay. If you see a student without a stamp wearing a hat please help us enforce the normal dress code and ask the student to remove their hat. Sorry and thank you for the extra work!
Stop that Song - During passing periods, we will be playing the same annoying song throughout the week until enough money is raised to stop it. :) Money can be donated towards this activity in Brown-Luke or Veenstra's rooms.
All of these activities will also be announced to the students next week along with more detailed information.

Learning around UHS
Our German partners from Lindenberg, Germany arrived Wednesday night and were at UHS bright and early Thursday morning! After a full day of school, we had our GAPP (German-American Partnership Program) Welcome Dinner for all of our host families. The German students gave presentations on sights in Berlin and Munich, and about their region, the Allgäu. The German partners and their families played some games and guessed (terrible) strange potato chip flavors. Most students cheered on the J-Hawks at their first football game on Friday. Students were inducted into the American Halloween culture by carving pumpkins on Saturday, and they turned out awesome!
This week will include 3 school days and 2 field trips to visit the Capitol building and the Jordan House, and Iowa State University and the wind tunnel! Trips to Des Moines and Ames wouldn’t be complete without meals at Zombie Burger or Hickory Park! For more pictures and updates, follow us on Twitter or Instagram @UHSGAPP.
