European and European influenced countries saw the final triumph of undress or informal styles over the brocades,lace,periwig,and powder of earlier 18th century.In the after math of the French Revolution, no one wanted to appear to be a member of the French aristocracy, and people began using clothing more as a form of individual expression on of the true self than as a pure indication of social states.
The fullness over bottom was balanced by a fuller, lower chest, achieved by rigid corseting, creating an S-shaped silhouette.These gowns typically did not have along train in the back, which was different from the gowns worn in 1870s, and extremely tight.
They were known as the hobble- skirt due to the tightness of them.Winter gowns were made in darker colors hues whereas summer ones were lighter colors, Velvet was also a very popular fabric using during this period.
Skirts were looped, draped, or tied up in various ways, and worn over matching or contrasting undershirts, the poloneise was a revival style based on a fashion of the1780s, with fitted, cutaway overdress caught up and draped over an underskiirt, long, jacket-like fitted bodices called"Basques"were also popular for daywear, and that's how 1880s fashion was.
