Mariner Report
Volume 10 Issue 35
Message from the Principal
It’s SUMMER TIME! While you and the family will be enjoying much-needed quality time, mornings with no alarm clocks, and maybe even some nights with no set bedtime, I want to encourage you to keep some semblance of academics alive in the fun.
Please continue to encourage your child/children to read at least 20 minutes a day.
Talk about the engineering and innovative thinking required to create the many things you get to explore at your summer destinations (beach, amusement parks, swimming pools, airports, train stations, etc.)
Involve your children in planning for the new school year
Practice keyboarding skills on a keyboard.
Have your children keep a journal to memorialize their summer and prep them for the infamous back-to-school writing prompt ‘What did you do this summer?’.
While we wait for your return, we are wrapping up the school year, enrolling our new Mariners, preparing next year’s classes and instructional program, while anticipating our own summer break! We wish you safe travels and an abundance of joy, laughter, and love this summer with your family. Life is short and tomorrow is not promised, so please spread kindness- even to those who you may not want to, be grateful for what you DO have, and make the best out of today! Thank you again for all of your incredible work. You're amazing!!
8th Grade Update
Everyone at IHCS would like to say CONGRATULATIONS to all 8th graders and we wish them the best of luck with their future plans as they embark on their high school journey!
8th Promotion will be held on Wednesday, June 9th beginning at 8:15am. It will be a drive through ceremony with students exiting the car to walk, receive their promotion certificate, and have an opportunity for a quick picture.
Drive thru promotion times are as follows:
Mr. Humble’s homeroom- 8:15 a.m.
Coach G/Ms.Lippe - 9:30 a.m.
Mr.Mejia - 11:00 a.m.
Mrs. Taleghani- 1:15 p.m.
This staggered schedule will alleviate an excessive amount of traffic and cars on A St. and reduce the wait time for families. It is imperative everyone follow the schedule. Please follow the signs and directions from staff. Additionally, it is important to have a visual in the car window with the student’s first and last name (large and bold) to help the process move smoothly.
To participate in promotion students MUST turn in their device with the charger. We will begin collecting devices on June 4th.
Students are still responsible for logging into classes even after they turn in their devices. Last day to turn in the device will be June 8th to be able to participate in promotion. Contact the office ASAP for more information about how and where to turn in the device.
Innovative Interventions
As we wrap up the school year, it is important to remember that Summer shouldn’t mean taking a break from reading. Studies show that most students experience a loss of reading skills over the summer break, but children who continue to read will gain skills. Here are some ideas that can help make reading fun during the summer.
Read aloud together with your child every day. Try to make it fun by reading outdoors such as on a blanket in your yard, or the park, or even at the beach. Make sure you take turns reading (both the parent and the child).
Set a good example! Children like to copy their parents, so turn off the TV or gaming system and have a Drop Everything And Read time (DEAR). Parents must be willing to model this behavior for their children.
Read the same book as your child and talk about it. Let kids choose what they want to read (even if it is a magazine, popular fiction, or a book on tape).
Take your children to the library regularly. Most libraries sponsor summer reading programs or clubs. This is also a great way to save money by having your child select books from the library instead of buying them. You can also check out books on tape.
Device Return
Please see the dates below for the return of student iPads and Chromebooks. Parents will pull into the small parking lot near the front office. Please remain in the car. Staff members will accept the student device and charger.
