Significant Indivisuals
At least six Englishmen were awarded empresario contracts in the 1820s, though none were successful in bringing in families; in the 1830s attempts at colonization began again, though with limited success. Beale's colony included a few English families, and the Peters colony in 1841 eventually resulted in the scattered settlement of large areas in North Texas, covering parts of twenty-six future counties. By the end of 1886 the English had invested about $25 million in western ranches and controlled more than twenty million acres of Texas land. The largest investor, the Capitol Freeland Land and Investment Company, invest a total of 1,532,226 Euros in 1885. So in 1891 Governor James S. Hogg approved the Alien Land Law, which restricted others from holding land unless they became United States citizens. Joseph Heneage Finch built a hotel so he could have the best rooms in town and bought a butcher shop so he could have the best pieces of meat. He invested $40,000 in cattle, but when he died they only sold for $750. The Anson brothers bred horses and during the Boer War in South Africa they sold 20,000 horses to the British there. Ben Thompson became famous for his silk hats, tailored suits, waxed mustaches and his skill with a gun.
