Extended Passing Period Trial
One of the ideas that has come out of various discussions surrounding the Challenge Success program is a modification to the bell schedule that would allow more time between classes. The thought is that the additional time between classes would allow for a slower pace to the day, more time for teacher-student interactions before and after class, time to transition between classes for both students and teachers and potentially the ability to use the restroom at a time other than break or lunch. We recently discussed the idea in Leadership and the group feels there are several benefits for BOTH students and teachers that warrant giving this a try. As a result, Beckman piloted a version of the schedule the week of January 21st. The schedule received extremely positive reviews from both teachers and students (98.3% of students gave a positive review), so we decided to extend the trial another week and are currently working on plans to continue a version of the schedule indefinitely. Here are some quotes directly from our student survey that received over 1000 responses:
"It impacted me in a positive way. It allowed to me to refresh my mind before going into the next class. I felt like in class I was paying more attention."
"It impacted me in a positive way, it had allowed me to talk with teachers after the bell for a longer period of time and had allowed me to use the restroom between classes rather than taking time away from class."
"I noticed that everyone looked more related and positive during passing period. Before the change i would see kids rushing to class, but now they can relax and even have time to talk to teachers about grades, or if they have any questions."

Medical Certificate Program Year 3 Medical Day
On Saturday, January 12th, students of our Medical Certificate Program (Year 3) had the opportunity to talk to 14 medical professionals in different stages of their career. First, students got a chance to hear from and ask questions to panel of College Freshmen who are Pre-Med, then College Juniors/Seniors currently applying to graduate school, then Medical Students from UC Irvine, then Doctors in Residency from UC Irvine, then Medical Professionals currently in their first 10 years of their career and finally Medical Professionals currently in their 10th or more year of their career. Overall, all students appreciated & enjoyed the opportunity to meet/learn from all the professionals and it was such a valuable professional experience. Camp Chronicles: Beckman Baseball
On June 1, 2019 a number of Beckman students will be participating in the 2019 Walk to End Lupus Now® at the Great Park of Orange County. The event raises critical funds to improve the quality of life for all people affected by lupus through programs of research, education, support, and advocacy. Lupus affects several of our students and also affects family members of our staff.
Our walk team, Patriot Power! - Beckman High School, set an ambitious goal to raise over $12,000. The leading high school fundraising team in the country was from Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, which raised just a little over $10,000. We can do better! Gather your friends and family and show your Patriot pride by walking with us on June 1. Please sign up for the walk at http://support.lupus.org/goto/beckman
