SHADY GROVE MATTERS WEEKLY UPDATE
March 11, 2024
THE ADMINISTRATOR'S CORNER
It is Women’s History Month at Shady Grove Middle School. Started as a celebration of International Women’s Day in 1911, Women’s History Month has developed into a month-long celebration of the impact of women in our world. We are truly appreciative of all of the women who have led globally and locally. During homeroom this month students will be learning about the key contributions of women to our global society. This week at Shady Grove Middle School we were busy! The boys and girls soccer team held tryouts with over 60 students participating. We will also be holding Science MISA in 8th grade...please make sure your students get rest in order to be prepared for the test. Finally, there will be a PTSA meeting held on Tuesday, March 10 in the media center from 7:00-8:30 pm. Please join us for this important meeting. In the words of Saundra Day O’Conner, first woman to serve on the Supreme Court, “As women achieve power, the barriers will fall. As society sees what women can do, as women see what women can do, there will be more women out there doing things, and we’ll all be better off for it.” That is all for now #TimberwolfNation! Wishing you all a fantastic week!
~Dr. Murray

SPECIAL EVENT FOR MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS
Hello Families,
I’m the College and Career Information Coordinator at Magruder and I’m hosting a virtual event in April called “Little-Known Secrets of Paying for College”. The event is geared for parents of middle and high school students, with the understanding that the (ever rising) cost of college often takes people off-guard. Topics covered during this virtual event will include:
- College funding strategies for parents with students who DO and DO NOT qualify for financial aid
- Strategies for parents who are looking to fund their student’s college education without destroying their plans and dreams for retirement
- The 13 most popular college funding financial vehicles explained and debunked
- How to implement strategies that may allow students to attend out-of-state or private colleges for a lower cost than attending an in-state public
- Ways to maximize and increase financial aid eligibility
The event will be Thursday, April 11th from 6:30-8:00 p.m.

WE'RE GOING TO LONDON IN SPRING 2025, AND YOU'RE INVITED!! 🛫
Dear Families,
We’re excited to tell you more about the trip we’re planning with EF Tours, our educational travel partner. Please be sure to register for this info session to be considered for this opportunity:
When students travel, they expand their knowledge of the world around them, discover more about themselves, and grow more confident. These skills are critical for creating the global citizens of tomorrow, and we would love to have your student join us on this adventure.
This informational website
- How this opportunity will benefit your student
- What we’ll see and do on our trip
- Everything that’s included in this experience
- How your child can earn academic credit
- How we’re keeping this safe and affordable
- How to enroll on this trip (before it fills up!) during EF’s risk-free enrollment period
There are limited spots on this trip, so we would love to have students from the Derwood area attend! High School students and family members are welcome on this Drama themed trip. We will visit the West End, participate in workshops with real working actors/directors/set designers, visit Shakespeare's home and more! We have plans to see three West End shows and visit royal palaces!
This is not an MCPS sponsored event. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at jo_e_belyea-doerrman@mcpsmd.org.
