The tulips that students planted last school year are blooming! What a wonderful reminder that spring is trying to make an appearance with some brighter days and warmer weather!
We had a little fun this week on April Fool's Day when we switched out the staff wall of pictures for goofy photos of the staff. It was fun to watch as students noticed the pictures and got to see the silly side of the adults here at Sunrise!
EMS Leadership Visits Sunrise 4th and 5th Graders
Last week, EMS student leaders had the opportunity to lead presentations in 4th and 5th grade classrooms here at Sunrise. The topic was on the importance of being patient with themselves and showing resilience to overcome challenges. EMS student leaders led a series of activities and talked about what the elementary students could look forward to in middle school. We are grateful that these EMS leaders took time to come speak to our students!

Planned Lockdown
We have a planned lockdown practice next week on Wednesday, April 10th at 2:55pm. Our weekly school-wide video and teachers will review lockdown procedures with students this coming week. The important point we stress with students is that their job is to listen and follow directions.
If you plan to pick your child up around this time on Wednesday, please note that you will need to come prior to 2:50 to ensure we can contact the classroom and get your child to you before the drill begins. If you arrive between 2:55 and 3:05 or so, we will be practicing and will not be able to let you in for pickup until the practice is complete.

Focus for March: Accountability
Accountability in young children is an essential part of their social and emotional development. Teaching accountability helps children understand the consequences of their actions, take responsibility for their behaviors, and develop important life skills such as problem-solving, self-regulation, and empathy. Here are some key points to consider when discussing accountability in young children:
-Setting Clear Expectations: Clearly communicate expectations to children regarding their behavior, responsibilities, and actions.
-Consistency: Consistency is crucial in teaching accountability. Enforce rules and consequences consistently so that children understand that their actions have predictable outcomes.
-Positive Reinforcement: Acknowledge and praise children when they demonstrate accountability.
-Natural Consequences: Allow children to experience natural consequences when they fail to meet expectations or make poor choices.
-Encouraging Self-Reflection: Teach children to reflect on their actions and take ownership of their behavior. Encourage them to think about what they did, why it wasn’t a good choice (if applicable), and what they can do differently next time.
-Be a role model for accountability by demonstrating responsible behavior and owning up to your mistakes.
-Open Communication: Maintain open communication with children and create a safe space for them to discuss their thoughts, feelings, and concerns. Encourage them to come to you with any problems or mistakes they've made without fear of judgment.
April Curriculum Highlight - Fountas and Pinnell
Fountas and Pinnell Classroom is an integrated system designed to support literacy instruction. It is a tool all Enumclaw School District elementary schools have in grades K-2. Fountas and Pinnell Classroom provides a comprehensive framework for literacy instruction, and includes a range of resources and tools that address various aspects of literacy, such as reading, writing, and language development.
We do not utilize the phonics aspect of the Fountas and Pinnell Classroom curriculum at Sunrise, as the curricula from Heggerty and UFI that we have in place are backed by research and found to be more comprehensive when addressing phonics and phonemic awareness.
The Fountas and Pinnell Classroom curriculum provides resources that cater to students' diverse needs and abilities when it comes to reading. The system emphasizes guided reading as a key instructional approach. It provides leveled books and resources for guided reading sessions, allowing teachers to work with small groups of students at their instructional reading level. The system encourages active participation and fosters a love for reading, which, in addition to mastery of core reading skills, is what we want to develop in all of our learners!
Parents/guardians must be volunteers in order to help in classrooms, eat lunch in the lunchroom with their child, or visit the playground to join their child at recess. The volunteer application is available by clicking the link below.
