2016 PROM SAFETY ASSEMBLY
It's prom season and Buckhorn High School is promoting Having Fun, Being Safe, & Staying Sober! The BHS Guidance Department and Safety Club hosted our Fun, Safe, & Sober - Prom Safety Assembly on Thursday, April 28th, and The Springs performed live! BHS Graduate Holly Helms Halcomb and her husband, Stewart Halcomb, performed their original song "21" at the event. This song was written after experiencing the tragic loss of someone very close to them, due to drinking and driving. Check out the videos of their performances below.
During the assembly, State Trooper, Curtis Summerville spoke on the importance of being a safe driver. 911 representative, Jared Anderson shared tips on the most effective way to utilize 911 in case of an emergency.
Immediately following the general assembly, there were breakout sessions for Juniors and Seniors. The Alabama ABC Board presented students with information on the consequences of underage and binge drinking. Children of Alabama and MADD (Mother's Against Drunk Driving) hosted a mock trauma scene with emergency responders. The Department of Public Health conducted an interactive game of Family Feud, with facts about teen driver safety. In addition, The Alabama Department of Transportation, University of Alabama Huntsville, and AT&T provided driving simulators for students to learn about distracted driving in a safe environment. The Madison County Sheriff's Department had a representative utilizing blind goggles (alcohol impaired vision), as students attempted to walk in a straight line. (It was harder than you think!)
Several of these agencies traveled from other Alabama counties in order to educate our youth on the importance of being a safe driver. We are thankful for the commitment of each agency represented and the continued support of Lara Bryant and State Farm Insurance.
Special thanks to guidance counselor, Mrs. Dee Gordon, and the BHS Safety Club for organizing this amazing event for the BHS students!! #BuckPride
