Adopt a Family Volunteer Effort
This year the 11th and 12th grade students continued the tradition of assisting local families via the Adopt a Family program. Adopt a Family was brought to NSHS in 2000 by a junior who wanted to give back to the community.
NSHS juniors and seniors have generously averaged about 300-350 gifts per year in that time frame. It has been a great tradition and this year we adopted 15 children for whom there will be no holiday this year without our help. 35% of the children in the greater Woonsocket area live below the poverty line. These are the people we are helping. We work with the Woonsocket Adopt a Family program to assist our neighbors.
NSHS Financial Aid Night
This workshop is sponsored by the Guidance Department and the Rhode Island Association of Financial Aid Officers. Jane Delamare, Financial Aid Officer at Johnson & Wales University, will offer a two-part program on financial aid for both seniors and their parent(s) or guardian(s) in the NSHS Library. The first section of the program will provide a general overview of the current status of financial aid. The remainder of the program will be a step-by-step explanation of completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and the CSS/Financial Aid PROFILE that is required by some schools.
If your child is planning to enter a university, college, community college, or a post-secondary trade or technical school after their senior year, you are encouraged to attend this program.

PSAT Exam/Results
On October 14th NSHS 10th and 11th graders participated in the new PSAT and should receive their results in either late December or early January. We look forward to discussing the results with the students and exploring CollegeBoard activities with them in small group lessons. Counselors will examine the data at the student and school level to be informed and implement changes as needed.

Semester One ILP Activities
On Tuesday, November 24th, all grade 9 students completed the Interest Profiler activity within their ILP in WaytoGoRI. This activity sheds light on what careers tend to match their interests. We hope this helps students think more about career choices.
On Wednesday, December 9th, all grade 10 students will be completing the Basic Skills Survey within their ILP on WaytoGoRI. This activity helps students understand how their skill set matches their potential career fields.
On Wednesday, December 16th, all grade 11 students will be completing the Work Values Sorter within their ILP on WaytoGoRI. This activity helps students understand how their values and choices impact possible career fields.
All Seniors will be completing an activity from 16Personalities.com. From 16 Personalities: “Take our Personality Test and get a 'freakishly accurate' description of who you are and why you do things the way you do.”
We believe that this will be a revealing exercise for the seniors and may help them better understand themselves as young adults.
