Happening at AEHS
Tomorrow we will experience a solar eclipse for the first time since 2017, and it appears there will not be another for at least another 20 years. We hope you get an opportunity to experience this safely, and offer some guidance.
The eclipse will be visible between 2:04 p.m. and 4:32 p.m. The maximum eclipse will be at 3:20 p.m., with the Sun 89% covered by the Moon. It is important that you DO NOT look directly at the sun!
The MCPS Department of Athletics provided the following guidance linked here, which incorporates resources from the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) and the Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association (MPSSAA) and has been established in consultation with the MCPS Department of Systemwide Safety Programs and with the approval of the Student-Athlete Medical Advisory Committee for MCPS Athletics.
It is also important to note that:
Again, DO NOT look directly at the sun without using the proper protective eyewear. Below are additional resources to help you enjoy and observe the eclipse safely.

Taste of Einstein (REPEAT)
Taste of Einstein is April 12, 5:30pm, which is right after Spring Break! Want to help and make this event a success? Feel free to sign up. If you would like to volunteer or participate, please sign up too. Feel free to share with your classes this information too.
Towing to begin after spring break (REPEAT)
Due to the vast number of unauthorized vehicles parked on campus, beginning Tuesday, April 2, vehicles that are not authorized to park on campus will be towed. Vehicles will be given two warnings not to park on campus, and will be towed on the third violation.
- 1st Violation - Vehicles will receive a written notice on the windshield and the vehicle's make and model, and license plate will be recorded internally
- 2nd Violation - Vehicles will receive an orange violation sticker on their rear window. The vehicle's make and model, and license plate will be recorded internally
- 3rd Violation - The vehicle will be towed to Henry's Wrecker Service (see below)
- Misc. Incidents - Vehicles parked in handicap parking without the proper hang tags, that block fire hydrants or parked in fire lanes, or that block other vehicles in, are subject to being towed without warnings
While we do not desire to tow any vehicles, the vehicles that are parked without authorization are preventing AEHS and MCPS staff and visitors who are authorized to park, from parking on campus.
Please Note: Vehicles that are not authorized to park on campus are not registered with AEHS. Therefore, we do not know who these vehicles belong to. Therefore, we are also unable to contact parents of students who might own these vehicles to warn them about the vehicle being parked without permission. We will, however, make every effort to identify and contact owners prior to receiving a 3rd violation, but this may not be reasonable in most cases.
Please Also Note: Towing will begin April 2. The 1st warning, however, has already been giving to some drivers, which has been shared in previous newsletter. Additionally, only authorized/registered vehicles may park along the "strip," which is the sidewalk along Newport Mill Park. This is also on campus parking and is reserved for staff.
Asynchronous Learning Day Monday April 22 (REPEAT)
Dear MCPS Families,
This message is to inform you that Monday, April 22 will shift to an asynchronous learning day for all students. The day is designated as a professional development day for teachers and possible make-up day for students in the 2023-2024 Traditional School Year Calendar. Students will engage in learning experiences and complete work asynchronously.
Asynchronous learning allows for flexibility for students to complete assignments with or without the use of technology. Additional time for students to complete assignments is granted for challenges or unforeseen circumstances.
District leaders and central services staff have been planning and communicating with school leaders in preparation for the asynchronous learning day on April 22. Schools will share more details about their asynchronous virtual instruction plans with students and families in mid-March, including directions on how to access resources and additional services.
This day will remain a professional learning day for teachers who will participate in self-directed learning and planning. Telework will be permitted. In addition, teachers will have time to engage in the asynchronous professional learning module with a focus on the Equitable Teaching and Learning Framework. More information will be provided to staff in the upcoming weeks.
There have been three inclement weather school closures so far in the 2023-2024 school year—Jan. 16, Jan. 17 and Jan. 19. The Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) provides the ability to repurpose certain days as virtual school days, including inclement weather days and staff professional learning days. MCPS has a built-in contingency plan that allows for two emergency school closures needed to make up the third emergency school closure day.
*Note: The calendar for the Innovative Schools, Arcola and Roscoe R. Nix elementary schools, does not change for Monday, April 22, 2024. It remains a non-instructional day for students and a professional learning day for teaching staff.

High School Networking Night with Latina Pathways
Dear High School Parents and Students,
The University of Maryland Chapter of Latina Pathways invites you to our Antes y Después: High School Networking Night on Zoom on April 11th, 2024 from 6:30pm - 7:30pm. We are looking for high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors with an interest in pursuing a higher education to join us in learning more about college from alumni and students alike!
Latina Pathways is a student-led non-profit organization that strives to advocate, educate, and fundraise to support all immigrants, with a special focus on Latines, into higher education. We recognize the gap between Latinos and other immigrants and education, and thus seek to provide equitable opportunities into higher education.
During this event, we will host an Alumni and Student Q&A session in which high school students will have the opportunity to submit their questions and have them answered by professionals and/or current college students. We will also host a one-to-one peer networking event so high school students and college students are paired together, based on career and/or educational interests of the high schoolers, to ask questions, seek advice, and seek community from the students at the University of Maryland.
This event has a limited capacity thus, we encourage students to sign-up soon to receive their spot in our networking night. Deadline to RSVP is April 9th, 2024 at 11:59pm.
We are excited to present this opportunity to high school students and if you are interested in attending this networking event, please be ready for and complete the following:
- Have a parent and/or guardian fill out this online form so we can further organize the Q&A session and the one-on-one peer networking activity for students under 18 years old.
- If more than one student is participating in the event, parents and/or guardians fill out the form for each student.
- For students 18 years and older, please fill out the form and respond N/A for sections related to the parent/guardian information.
If you have any questions or concerns, please contact us through our organization’s email at umdchapter@latinapathways.org. You may also learn more about us through our website at https://latinapathways.wixsite.com/umdchapter. We look forward to connecting with our community and supporting students into higher education!
