Notes From Mr. Nichols
Hello Everyone –
Welcome to Summer Break! I hope everyone has some time to do the things they love with their kids. Summer is a time where a lot of my fondest memories happened as I was growing up and I’m sure your kids will feel the same as they grow as well. I wanted to give you a few updates on things happening at Windsor over the summer and as we head into the 2019-2020 school year.
Office Hours – Our school office hours will be 7:00-3:00 for the summer months. At least one of us (Ms. Casey or I) are typically here but sometimes we have overlapping meetings or vacation time so it’s a good idea to call first to make sure one of us is around to help you out.
Summer Construction – As many of you know, the city of Des Moines is planning some major changes to the University Avenue corridor and Windsor is certainly affected by that. Sorry to just list the changes out, but it will be easier to follow (I hope 😊):
a. The pedestrian bridge will be coming down and replaced by a signaled crosswalk. It will have a crossing guard posted at it before and after school.
b. To make room for the crosswalk, the city will be expanding University Avenue through our immediate area. This will require the temporary removal of our bus lane. They will put in a new one once construction is drawing to a close.
c. Once the street is done, it will be one lane each direction from 63rd Street to approximately Polk Boulevard. There will be a turn lane in the middle and five to six foot ‘buffers’ on each side.
d. Due to the change in the number of lanes, our west parking lot will be redone to reverse the flow. That means next year traffic will enter from the south off of Dagle and exit onto University Ave. There was some discussion last I knew how to do the entrance to the circle lot and handicap parking – I haven’t seen the final plan yet on that. I will send something out later in the summer so that you can plan pick-up and drop-off procedures.
Auditorium – Thanks to a lot of hard work by our parent group, PAWS, we will be seeing some improvements to our auditorium. By the start of next school year the auditorium will have a permanent projector mounted to the ceiling and a sound system installed. That means no more drop cords, blocked off projectors in the middle of the seating areas, or wires run across the floors for events such as Movie Night, assemblies, or 5th grade recognition!!
PAWS – Speaking of PAWS, I’d like to say a huge thank you for all the tireless and selfless work they do at our school. It’s all behind the scenes, it’s all volunteer, but there’s no doubt Windsor would not be the great school that it is without their help. I would like to especially thank outgoing board members Renee Burg and Shelley Langfitt for all of their leadership for the last two years and say welcome to the two new board members – Jenny Howard and Ka’Meka Lowery.
Staffing – Every year we have a few staffing changes, and this year is no exception. So I’d like to announce the following teacher moves that will affect next school year. Ms. Hoffman will make a shift to second grade, Ms. Merical will be moving to first grade, and Ms. Bolte will make a change to 5th grade. As of right now there are no other changes expected.
Registration – Online registration will open on July 15. For most of you it will simply mean verifying information or simple updates like phone numbers. BUT, if you get stuck or need help you can call us here at school at 242-8440 or we will be having our Registration Help Night at Windsor on July 25th from 1-7pm.
Time Change – Next year there will be a small shift in the times for school year. The new bell times will be 7:45-2:40. There will be no more early outs on Wednesdays. I will get you more specific times for things as we get closer to the new year.
Calendar – Next year’s district calendar looks very, very different and includes things such as a fall break for students. If you have not seen it, you can find it at https://cdn.dmschools.org/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/19-074-FY20-Regular-School-Calendar-rev.-5.28.19.pdf
Breakfast and Lunch – Windsor will again be designated as a Community Eligible School so all students will receive a free breakfast offered to them, as well as free school lunch.
Well, I think that’s about it for now. Enjoy your summertime and we’ll see you in August!

Teacher Experience
Maya C bought the “Paint with Mrs. Heddinger” teacher experience at family fun night. She was able to choose one friend to come with her and I provided the canvases and paint. We had a blast over the course of a couple days finishing our paintings! They decided to make the ocean during the day and the ocean at night. Very creative girls!
