Wauwatosa Montessori School
April 5, 2019
I hope everyone had a wonderful Spring Break and is rested and ready to finish the school year strong! It is great to have the classrooms back in action and student learning continuing. There are many upcoming events and things going on, so be sure to read through the newsletter and mark your calendar as necessary!
We ended our first week back from break with an all school assembly that was organized and lead by a group of five students who started a "Green Innovation Team." During the assembly, we revisited what compositing is, why we do it, and then we worked in our school assembly teams to practice sorting some common items that we see in the building to really solidify all students understanding of how to accurately place items in the compost/recycle/landfill bins within the classrooms. I encourage you to ask you child about this and see what they can tell you! The assembly wrapped up with a challenge that the Green Team is leading for the remainder of the month. They will be weighing each classrooms "Landfill" or "Waste" bins at the end of each day through April 29th, with the goal for each classroom to reduce the amount of waste they produce and to build awareness around Earth friendly practices. The Green Team put in a lot of hard work and team collaboration to put this assembly and challenge together. I am proud of them for having the courage to present to their peers and be student leaders around something they are passionate about!
The week of April 8-12th is Tornado and Severe Weather Awareness Week in Wisconsin. This provides a perfect opportunity each year to review and practice our severe weather procedures at school. To do so, we will be participating in the Statewide Tornado Drill on April 11th @ 1:45pm. There is a second statewide tornado drill planned for April 11th at 6:45pm to provide families an opportunity to practice their plans for severe weather at home.
Next week, all 3rd-8th grade students will be taking the Wisconsin Forward Exam. All students will need to have headphones for one of the particular sessions as there is a listening component. If your child does not already have headphones at school or takes them back and forth, please be sure that they have them available at school all of next week.
Lastly, if you're looking for things to do, the following are all wonderful opportunities in the next month:
