Weekly Coaching Communication
Make it a great day -- every day!
29 January -- 02 February 2018
Hats off to you!
Here's this past week's amazement:
- Thank you for all of your collaboration and insights for Monday's professional learning, especially in the afternoon with the proficiency scale and assessment work.
- If you see a SBL Council Member (Husmann, Tupa, Halac, Dierks, Libolt), please thank them for their extra time to put together a celebration of your great work for proficiency scales and assessments, as well as a plan for moving forward with our SBL practice.
- Thank you for the Shout Out, Mrs. Fisher, when attendance jived on Wednesday -- you have a thankless job of keeping track of our students and when it all aligns, it's a wonderful thing.
- Thank you to the Blended Learning team of teachers for sacrificing another day out of your classroom to push yourselves to think outside the box and make instruction more engaging for students.
- Thank you to all who are donating to the food pantry -- the community supports this school, and giving back is a nice way to say thank you.
- Thank you DTLs for your deep thinking on Wednesday night to clarify inference to make your team's step #2 work more successful.
- Thank you to all of you who make the Extra Pointer Breakfast happen -- delicious food and great students to celebrate!

Holocaust Survivor to Speak at CPU High School
Dr. Bornstein was four-years-old when he and his family were forced out of their home and into the atrocities of the Holocaust. We will hear his story and the journey his life has taken since his liberation.
Together, Dr. Bornstein and his daughter authored his story and its aftermath in this New York Times Bestselling Book, Survivors Club: The True Story of a Very Young Prisoner of Auschwitz (2017). The link on the title of the book provides access to Dr. Bornstein's biography and purchase of the book on Amazon.
CPU's high school students and staff will be attending Dr. Bornstein's lecture, along with our 8th graders from the middle school, an 8th grade group from a middle school in Waterloo, the CPU school board and a limited number of community members.
Mr. Libolt will work on a schedule to accommodate all classes the day of the presentation. If you have questions or would like to help (if you have not already been asked to help) with the hosting of this event, please contact me at your earliest convenience.
The Press Citizen in Iowa City and the New York Times have also printed articles you can read to gain background on our presenter.
Pope's Professional Learning -- Sharing to Build Capacity
Blended Learning and the 4 Cs
One of the resources that was shared was a guide to the Four Cs from the National Education Association (NEA). In the introduction of the material, John Stocks, the NEA Executive Director, is quoted, saying,
Using the "Four Cs" to engage student is imperative. As educators prepare students for the new global society, teaching the core content subjects -- math, social studies, the arts -- must be enhanced by incorporating critical thinking, communication, collaboration and creativity. We nee new tools to support classroom teachers and education support professionals in they profession, even as the implement new strategies in heir classrooms.
This week, I will offer an in-depth look at the component of critical thinking.
IMPORTANCE:
The "habits of mind," aka "thinking" skills, such as, analysis, interpretation, precision and accuracy, problem solving, and reasoning, can be more important than any content knowledge for success in college, careers and daily living.
DEFINITION:
Reason Effectively, Use Systems of Thinking, Make Judgments and Decisions, and Solve problems.
RELATION TO OTHER SKILLS:
Critical thinking calls upon other skills, such as communication and collaboration to solve problems and perform in a certain system of thinking. Information literacy is also part of critical thinking to examine, then analyze, interpret and then evaluate the information.
HOW TO ASSESS CRITICAL THINKING IN YOUR CLASSROOM:
