Congratulations Traci Nelson-Power of 1!
Celebrations!
- Share Time: Each day the students do something different to share-Monday is "Model Monday", Tuesday-"Tunes and Talk Tuesday", Wednesday-"Walk and Talk Wednesday", Thursday is "Turn and Talk Thursday", and Friday is "Free Choice Friday". Pre-planning share time, helps us remember to allow students to share their week!
- Having parents write motivational notes to their children each day of MAP testing-love this idea and involving parents! What a great way to also build stronger relationships with parents & children!
- Feedback on a post-it note for each student along with verbal feedback!
- Great anecdotal/conferencing notes for writing-saw several different approaches this week!
12 Strategy Review from Equity & Access Training
Strategy #5: Repeat and & Question
Sometimes people don't realize what they've said. Repeating and questioning give them a chance to reexamine and to perhaps recover. At other tiems, individuals communicate negative stereotypes or statements without directly saying them. This technique can help surface unspoken assumptions.
Example: What do you mean Bobbie, when you say, "Isn't that just like a ______"?
Strategy #6: Appeal to Empathy
Appealing to empathy (How would you feel...?How do you think he feels...?) is a technique that works well with people who have empathy. Not everyone does. However, even with empathy, you can't always put yourself in someone else's shoes. Fully understanding the cumulative impact of persistent denigration or discrimination may be difficult for those who have not personally experience it. Given that, when you appeal to empathy, consider parallel ways someone might understand.
Example, "Sarah, remember how frustrated you were when Brenda dismissed your ideas because you were new here? Now it seems as though you are doing the same thing to Bruno simply because he has an accent. How do you think he feels?"
Congratulations Pam Delnevo-Power of 1 Recipient!
Nurse Pam is deserving of the Power of One for countless reasons. First and foremost she is an advocate for all students, families, and staff here at Sequiota. Pam takes time to build individual relationships with students. If a student has had a rough day she takes time to listen and care for them in ways beyond physical health. Pam’s day never looks the same and she is willing to tackle the day with ease. Pam may have 5 (or more!) students in her room, a parent on hold, and a teacher reaching her from the playground at the same time, and she pushes through with strength and poise.
Here are just a few examples of some ways Nurse Pam goes above and beyond:
- Provides food and clothing vouchers for students
- She goes out of her way to obtain used clothing for our students
- Provides referrals to community resources
- You may see Pam doing the “potty dance” to encourage a student :)
- Wellness coordinator
- Problem solver
- Caretaker
- Pam goes many days without an interrupted lunch and never complains
- Collaborates with the school counselor on a number of issues
- And SO MUCH MORE!
Pam, you make each day a better day! I feel lucky to call you a co-worker and a friend!
From Curriculum:
K-5 Teachers,
Need a place to collaborate about curriculum or a quick place to offer feedback ? One of our Year 3 Master Learner Institute groups had the great idea to create a Facebook group to collaborate. We are excited to announce that we have expanded their work and started Facebook groups for each grade level. Below are the links you can use to request to join our SPS Learning Support Facebook groups.
We need your help! This summer, we will be working to revise the K-5 Integrated Units and develop assessments. There are two ways you can help:
· Provide Feedback
Facebook Groups
· Revise and Write Assessments in July 2018
o Let us know your interest by filling out the Google Form.
o Teachers selected to help with revisions will receive a stipend of $20.00 per hour.
