CHS Community Newsletter
March 21, 2024
Principal's Message
Good afternoon Canby High School Students & Families,
This week, I want to send a warm welcome to our Incoming Freshman Parents and Families. You will be receiving this newsletter along with your school’s newsletter for the rest of the year. Please see the incoming freshman section below. It has a welcome video that is the first in a Welcome Video Series that I will be sharing in order to help in the transition to high school. We are excited for the Class of 2028 to join our CHS family.
Incoming freshman students will be forecasting for next year’s classes soon. Watch for forecasting information. Just after break on Wednesday, April 3 at 5:30pm, we will be hosting Incoming Freshman Forecasting night. This night will consist of a welcome, general information, and a forecasting workshop with time for individual support. We encourage all incoming freshman students and families to attend. Just a reminder to our senior students and parents to check out their section below as well.
Last weekend our Cougar Dance Team earned two amazing 2nd place finishes at the state competition. Their routines were outstanding, and many individual dancers were honored with awards and scholarships. There are more details below. Last Saturday, our Chess Team competed in the OSCF Co-Ed Team State Championship. Nika Chernishov, Isaac Santiago, Maritza Torres Garcia, Ethan Rondez, Hernan Miranda-Pastrana, and Brayden Zinsli took 3rd Place in the K-12 Open section with Ethan earning the Best Player on Board 4. Great job Dance and Chess! Our FFA students are headed to the state tournament this weekend. We wish them the best of luck!
Lastly, a reminder that we are off tomorrow (Friday, 3/22) and all of next week. There will be no newsletter next week. Have a wonderful spring break!
Best,
Cari Sloan

Important Information
Care Award
Do you know a school staff member who has made a difference in your life, the life of a child you know, or in our community?
Together, Kiwanis and Canby School District offer the Canby Area Recognition of Excellence (CARE) Award program to provide opportunities to recognize staff members who excel in supporting our children. This award shows staff how important they are to our community.
Please go to this link to nominate a deserving staff member.
Student SEED Survey
Canby School District will offer Oregon’s Student Educational Equity Development (SEED) Survey to students in grades 3-11, as required by Oregon law, during state testing this spring. The SEED Survey gives students the opportunity to voice their experiences in Oregon’s education system and is designed to capture their sense of belonging and experiences at school.
What is the SEED Survey?
It asks students about access to learning resources, learning opportunities, self-efficacy beliefs, and sense of belonging
Grades 6-11 includes questions about career-technical education and extracurricular activities
Grades 9-11 includes questions about post-graduation planning
Multiple choice, with additional open-ended questions for grades 6-11
Takes about 10-20 minutes to complete
Students may decline to answer individual questions
Oregon law (HB 2656) permits parents or guardians to decline to have their student participate in the SEED Survey. Any student who is excused from participating will have supervised study time or another learning activity while other students are completing the survey.
If you would like your student to participate in the SEED Survey, no further action is required.
If you do not want your student to participate in the SEED Survey, please click here to opt out. For Canby High School, please respond by Friday, April 5.

Oliver Insurance Athlete of the week
Week of 3/25/24 Allison Hayzlett - Softball and Quintin Esmay - Baseball
Dance
In the 1A-5A Traditional Category we competed against 13 teams and earned 2nd place! And, in the 1A-6A Show Division, we earned 2nd place out of 10 teams!
Our team qualified for the OSAA Academic All state standing with an average GPA of 3.35! We also had 5 seniors qualify as Scholar Athletes, earning a 3.5 GPA or higher: Ella McKean, Gracelyn Chaffee, Lulu Anderson, Luke Harms, and Patricia Campbell. During the 5A Drill Down competition, out of 100 dancers, two Cougar Dancers placed in the top 6! Senior Patricia Campbell earned 5th place and Senior Zoie Fulks earned 2nd Place in the challenging drill down competition!
Seniors Ava Coleman, Patricia Campbell and Gracelyn Chaffee performed with the Allstate team. 11 members represented the 5A division, and 3 of them were from Canby! Then, to top it off - the DDCA announced its annual scholarship recipients. The dance scholarship is based on the top scores from the Allstate auditions. 3 dance scholarships were awarded in the 5A division, and our own Gracelyn Chaffee received one of them! Patricia Campbell received the DDCA Diversity Scholarship and Ella McKean earned the Academic Scholarship! All three dancers will receive money toward college or trade school!
The coaches are very proud of this amazing team - especially their growth over the season and the way they love each other! They are amazing dancers, performers and competitors. Shout out to our amazing parents - best in the biz - and our incredibly supportive community!
Assistant Coach Jenna Jernstrom, alumni of Canby High School and Dance Team, has been coaching with the team for 8 years, she has also been the head Cheerleading Coach for the past 4 years as well - is wrapping up her time with the program as her family is moving out of state. Jenna has contributed so much to the dance team, choreographing, teaching, planning, fundraising, and most importantly mentoring and inspiring dancers to be their best. She has left an indelible mark on this program and will be greatly missed.
Baseball
The baseball team is off to a 2-0 start in the young season. The Cougs won 1-0 in walk off fashion vs Dallas in 9 innings and beat Lebanon 3-0. Joe Scott has led the way on the mound while Quintin Esmay and Brady Ackerman have been doing good things at the plate. The cougars have done an excellent job of playing defense so far. The Cougars will face Jesuit on the 20th before heading to Arizona to play 4 games in a tournament.
Softball
CHS softball has gotten off to a great start with first year head coach Emily Conklin. This past week the girls beat Reynolds 10-0 and beat Bend 3-2. Bend is currently ranked 2nd in the OSAA Coaches Poll and the Cougars are currently ranked 8th. Next up, the Cougars are at Sunset High School for a tournament March 25-26.
Boys Golf
The Boys golf team hosted our first league match Monday at Willamette Valley Country Club. We had three golfers score in the 80’s: Mason DeBruyn (82), Jack Thompson (85), and Maverick Samoilov (89). Both the Varsity and JV teams finished in 3rd place.
Girls Golf
Girls golf team had their first league match where they took 3rd. They were led by Gracie Carter with a 90, followed by Hayden Olson with a 93.
Lacrosse
The lacrosse team had their first game on Friday against Grant and won 12-5 to start the season off on a great note. Last night the lacrosse team beat Camas 11-2. On Wednesday they take on Sheldon at home.
OHSET
Canby's OHSET team took top five placings in 15 events and have qualified for state in 7 individual events and 4 team events. We are looking forward to our last district meet in April to lock down a few more state qualifications.
