SpeedGrader in Canvas
About SpeedGrader:
As an instructor, SpeedGrader allows you to view and grade student assignment submissions in one place using a simple point scale or complex rubric. Canvas accepts a variety of document formats and even URLs as assignment submissions. Some document assignments can be marked up for feedback directly within the submission. You can also provide feedback to your students with text or media comments.
For each student, SpeedGrader has five areas:
- View student submissions (text entries, website URLs, media recordings, and/or file uploads). Preview .doc, .docx, .ppt, .pptx, and .pdf submissions using Crocodoc; review other file format submissions using the document previewer or Google Preview
- Assign a grade based on your preferred assessment method (points or percentage)
- View Rubric to assist with grading (if one is added to the assignment)
- View comments created by you or the student about the assignment
- Create text, video, and/or audio commentary for the student
SpeedGrader for iOS:
The SpeedGrader app is designed to help instructors minimize their workload when grading student assignments. SpeedGrader allows you to review assignments at ease even when you're on the go.
Instructors can grade submissions directly from their mobile devices. SpeedGrader supports the same functionality supported in the desktop version of SpeedGrader:
- View photo and video submissions
- Listen to audio submissions
- Grade using different methods including a simple point scale or a complex rubric
- Make comments using video, audio, and text on student assignments
- Hide student names while grading
- Add comments with Crocodoc
The SpeedGrader app requires a Canvas account and pulls the same data as found in the desktop version of Canvas SpeedGrader. Instructors can use the SpeedGrader app on iOS tablets (iPads) and all Android devices. View the video below to learn more.
Crocodoc Overview:
Crocodoc is another feature within SpeedGrader. Crocodoc is a tool that allows annotations on online assignment submissions in Canvas. If Crocodoc has been enabled for your institution, you can use Crocodoc for assignments and in SpeedGrader. Students can use Crocodoc when viewing annotated feedback on assignment submissions. Instructors can view when students view annotated feedback in the assignment details section of the sidebar.
When you open a submission, Crocodoc will automatically save any annotations made to the submission file for one hour. You can restart a Crocodoc session at any time by refreshing the submission page. To help you avoid losing work, Canvas will generate a session expiration warning after 50 minutes.
Some browsers may not initially render comments correctly when viewing feedback. If your browser includes a built-in PDF viewer, select the option to view the PDF in the system viewer. You can also download PDF files with comments to view on your computer. To view downloaded PDF files, you must have Adobe Reader installed on your device. To print annotations, you must enable commenting as part of the PDF print options.
Compatible Crocodoc Files
If a submission includes a file that can be rendered in Crocodoc, but the submission preview is not complete, Canvas will generate a message stating the document is still processing. Please note that Crocodoc is not available in the Canvas beta environment.
If a file is submitted that is not compatible with Crocodoc, the Canvas document previewer will still display the file, but Crocodoc markup and commenting will not be available.
Canvas currently supports .doc/.docx, .ppt/.pptx, and .pdf Crocodoc file formats.
